Got a problem and need some coaching. I put the battery back in the Super M 2 weeks ago, turned on the gas, cranked her over, it tried to start, will run 2 - 5 seconds and then shut off. When you try it again, it does the same thing?? It has electronic ignition instead of points and condenser in Distributor. I checked the gas flow and screen @ the carb. A-Ok changed plugs and wires, Pulled carb. off and took it apart - found nothing wrong, put a different coil on w/ no luck. Any ideas?? Did I possibly burn up the electrinic ignition module? It has a 12 volt system, new wiring w/ a new alternator last fall, I checked all connections and found nothing.
Thanks Ken

I've used Pertronix for years on older cars, such as 1959 Olds and !966 Corvair. It may be the unit. Very early ones were easily destroyed by heat, they were reengineered and all's well. You may have an older one.

Connect one of the spark plug wires to a test spark plug, and watch closely. Does the spark "cut off" when the engine begins to stall, or does spark continue as the engine is coasting to a stop?

Hi Bob, I did that and the spark is bright blue at first then tapers off to nothing in just a few seconds.

Using a test light, verify that power remains on to the coil and electric igntion... to rule out a bad ignition switch, or a bad ballast resistor (if used).

What type of electronic igntion are you using?

Pretty sure it's a ignitor by Pertronix!??
Thanks and I will check it out tomorrow,
Ken

I haven't seen many problems with the Pertronix units being "thermal", and shutting down.

Any idea of what the primary resistance is of the coil you are using, and is a ballast reistor used?

Also, check the gap between the magnet sleeve, and the electronic module. If that is too wide, plus there is distributor shaft bushing wear, spark can be intermittant. I forget what the "spec" is, but the closer the better, as long as there is no actual contact.

Got it figured out; it was a bad Ballast Resistor. Replaced it and started right up.
Thanks Bob for your help!!!
