What The Heck Is Going On?

Got me,

Tractor sat for 6 years in a shed with a bad engine. I buy the goofy thing, throw an engine, clutch and T/A in it, test the hydraulics with a flow rater which says we have 2100 psi and away we go.

I later realize that the 3 point will not stay up when the tractor is shut off (drops like a rock). Further, it "hunts" to hold position when the tractor is running.

I run the trouble tree and everything points at a leaky hitch piston.

Okay, I plow 100 acres with the spinner plow this spring, which uses the hitch as well as the remotes. Everything seems to work just fine as long as the engine is reved up.

Now, the last few days I notice that the darned hitch is okay but the remotes seem a little weak in the knees.

What's going on?

Allan

Hey Allan, sounds like you are having some spring time fun...

A lot of the single acting cylinders (which I assume is basically what drives your 3 point, never been into one since we didn't use them) have a self energizing seal. The pressure in the cylinder forces the seal to seal up. It may be that it was a bit "bent" when sitting in the shed, and is now loosening up and working better.

As far as your weak hydraulics, no help for you there.

Allan, I'm no mechanic, but I have seen some wierd things happen with machinery. So with no further ado, and til someone sharper than I posts an answer, here's what might be hapnin':

Maybe the lift cylinder just needed a good work out after sitting for a few years.

As for the remotes being slow, was the 3 point lever pushed all the way down when the slowness was noticed? Reason I mention it, a few times I've noticed the remotes on our 1066 will just barely work. Somehow I figgered out that when this happens, I can pull up on the 3 point lever just a little bit and the remotes will go back to working like they should.

Remember now, all of these comments and suggestions are coming straight out of the shade.

Mitch

Yeah,

How the heck does that go now? I remember reading it in the darned book. Something slows the remotes. I'll have to dig out the book.

The hitch has the priority over the remotes because the plow won't spin until the hitch has finished lifting. But, there is also another part to it..... just can't remember what the heck it is. Anyway, those levers all effect each other if in the wrong position.

I was gonna check that too, because I can remember pushing that draft lever clear down forward when I was unhooking the plow the other day.

You might be onto something here. I'll look at it next time I get out there.

Thanks,

Allan

"The hitch has the priority over the remotes . . . "

That makes sence. When I'm using my grader blade, the tilt and swing cylinders will not function if the hitch is coming up. Always wondered why that was.

I've learned something I didn't know. I got a long way to go. One reason I come here.

Keep it coming!
