I bought an H last weekend that had been sitting for at least 25 years. I checked the oil and was surprised to see it was nice and clean and much more to my surpirse, it turned easily and was not frozen up. When I drained the oil, there was some water in the pan...but I thought this could be expected from condensation. After running it, there is no water in the oil. Carb, coil and the fuel plumbing were missing. I cleaned the gas tank, did the plumbing, and put a carb on it...hooked it to the battery...and bang, it ran---and runs good...but IT SMOKES LIKE that train you see in the movies going across the horizon. I hooked it to a trailer loaded with lumber and drug it around for about an hour on the road and across a plowed field..smoking did not improve. JUST WONDERING, is there someway to scuff up these walls and get the rings seated without tearing this thing down? In 1955 when they were having trouble with the 55 Chevrolet buring a quart of oil per 100 miles, they recommended to the dealers to feed some Bon Ami through it....Any thoughts??

I have herd that some have had success with Sea Foam Deep Creep sprayed in the carburetor and Rizlone oil additive. I tired it on my backhoe and it cut my oil consumption in half (whoopee from a quart to an hour to a quart to two hours :<[ ) but I figured it was a reasonably priced thing to try. Ended up tearing it down and found excessively worn rings and sleeves.

Hey Tom,

You now know two things. Why it wasn't frozen up and also why it was parked in the first place. :>)

I will almost bet you have some stuck ring.I would pull the plugs and fill it with tranny fluid right after you run it and get it warm. After doing this I would run it for a while it will take some time for the tranny fluid to burn out of the cylinders.I did this on a 9n ford and it finally worked after 3 or 4 times.Just make sure and change your engine oil after doing this or you will wind up with a lot of tranny fluid in your crankcase.Doing it after its warmed up will help pull the tranny fluid in between the ring and the piston and help brake them loose from the ring groove .Check you compression before doing this you may only have one cylinder with a stuck ring....Hope I could help River Bottom Farmer
