I've recently restored my Father-in-law's 140 and am real interested in determining they correct year of this tractor before I put decals on it. I have researched this site as well as others to try and determine the correct year and come with conflicting results. The ID label reads 3173 J. I think this puts it at 1959-1960, but according to the pictures I've seen of these years they have a rounded radiator shroud. This one has the squared off shroud with the white grill inset. It has the "IH" emblem on the gill too. It was a 6 volt that has been converted. I have casting numbers and pictures of the tractor that I can email if it would help. I also bought the suggested book by Fay and Kraushaar. Any help with this will greatly be appreciated.

Jimmy: In that size tractor the last rounded grill was the Farmall 130, and production of those ended in 1958. 140 production commenced that same year. 140s from the beginning have square grill with horizontal bars same as all other 40-60 series tractors. In mid 1963 that grill changed to match 04-06 grills and from there it remained the same until the end of production in 1979. Not 1976 as someone else suggested.

Lanson: The serial number of your 140 is on the left side of the clutch housing. It is on a metal tag rivited to the casting. Tag is about 2" x 4".

I don't think either of the numbers you've given are serial numbers. That R5 number is a part number. Farmall 140 serial numbers are 3, 4 or 5 number digits followed by a J.

The grille and hood could have been changed.

The 3173 is a 1959 the "J" means it was equipped with a Rockford Clutch. The 140 is the same vintage as a 560 and has the same grlle style. K-Mo

I think you might be thinking of a 130. I think the 140 came out with a grille to match the 240, 340, 460, 560, and 660. They then changed it to match with the 606, 656, and 706 later on. After that, I believe the badging changed, but the grille stayed the same. I am sure someone else will have more information regarding this.

You are correct.

The 140 was made from 1959 through 1976, I believe. In the beginning, it had a 460/560 style "4-bar" grille with flat front, but rounded corners on the sides. When the '06 series came out, it got a more "square" grille to match the style of the larger tractors.
