Looks like serial # on tractor is 7285J. This is a positive ground 6-volt 140. Serial # hard to read , scratched up. Is the above mentioned number good or can be de-coded.

Thanks in advance for any replys.

You can look it up yourself. Just look down the column of links to the left, and click on the one that says "Serial Numbers."

There are three categories that it could be under:

1. Farmall
2. International
3. Farmall & International

Just keep looking until you find the listing for 140s.

The listings show the first serial number for each year the tractor was produced. Each tractor has its own unique serial number. You will probably not find your exact serial number listed, so you need to figure out which two your serial number falls between. When your serial number comes after one year's first, but before the next year's first, then your tractor was made in that year.

I would expect your 140 to be an early one with a 4-digit serial number.

The J means "Rockford clutch." Basically, it's meaningless because the vast majority of IH tractors came with Rockford clutches...

Read the menu to the left. You will find something called "serial numbers".
