Many of you know me on this forum, I am 58, retired teacher, run a 100 ACRE FARM, LOVE CATTLE AND fARMALLS....well Monday I had a stroke.....I was waiting for some guys to pick up calves at the farm and decided to wheel a few loads of stone to the house for a rock garden I am making , on the fourth load I had dropped two into the wheel barrow, about 40-50 pounders, I turned to pick up another and the rock pile went blurry, I was immediately dizzy, my left leg felt like it was asleep, my left arm went numb and I fell and rolled off the side of the gangway...at that very moment two neighbours drove in to help us load calves and they saw me go down, they helped me up and I sat down on a hay bale beside the barn door...I knew, I have taken several St John's Ambulance courses and CPR lifesavers, I said I had to get to the hospital ASAP I was there within 30 minutes,in emerg, and was given some pill to chew, my bloodpressure was 174/96, the feeling came back to my arm and leg, experienced head ache for two days no apparent long term damage. I have a cat scan tommorrow and some other tests next week. The reason I wanted you to read this was for you! I considered myself healthy, have a yearly physical, don't smoke, not overweight..well by maybe 20-25, do physical work everyday and considered myself in good shape, have lots of stamina and always capable of doing my physical share...HAD NO IDEA MY BLOODPRESSURE WAS HIGH!..DANGEROUSLY HIGH! Get yourself checked out, the nurse at work, the drugstore your doctor..get your bloodpressure checked and don't run the risk I did. All the work and money I put into the farm, my cattle ,my tractors don't mean a thing if I am paralysed and can't walk or work them...this was my warning, I was being looked after, HE sent my neighbours, He kept me safe, He has looked after me...remember my friends I was just like you , healthy and felt that nothing could happen to a healthy guy like me, now I am scrambling to get all my medical tests done, I am on aspirin and my blood pressure has come down to 139/89, a better but not perfect reading, incidentally my yearly physical was booked for tomorrow...NO SYMPATHY PLEASE, ALL I WANT IS FOR YOU TO go and get yourself checked for blood pressure, Monday night was the last thing I would have ever guessed! Be safe out there and know that I don't want this to happen to any of you..its so simple!! FINE IN EXETER ONTARIO..MIKE

Mike. I am glad you are going to be OK I ck mine about once a week and I am on the border line. I have a physical in about 4 weeks. I must take a DOT physical a couple of weeks after that. I will proabley be on med by then. High blood presure killed my wife after having it for 30 years some times out of control. It was some thing that ran in her family.

Glad your O.K. My younger brother is a Phy Ed teacher and in great shape physically. His pulse rate at rest is under 50 beats a minute. He goes to the gym, rides bike, cross country skies, eats healthy and has never smoked. He is also under 30 years old. Nothing to worry about right? Guess again, his blood pressure has been over 170/110 at times since his mid twenties. Needless to say he is on medication. Get it checked. Period

Been on meds about 3 years now. Used to give blood, Red Cross checked pressure, started going up- they refused to draw when it went over 100/150. Headaches, nose bleeding, blurred vision were other hints. Couple other problems also, now down around stage one hypertension level. Follow docs orders, stay around here. RN

Mike,
That"s a scary one to say the least. We take so much for granted in this short span we have here. You are right, HE is looking out for you. HE has given you all you have. I"m 45 now and starting to feel the aches and pains already. No problems with BP, but the joints sure tighten up alot. I"m still able to go out and play hockey in the beer league, so I count that as a plus. You take it easy for awhile and thanks for the heads-up. They need you for all those pot-luck get-togethers.

Michael: Wake up call time, a good number of us have had our warnings for various health problems. My doctor once said, "You can live the first part of your life a wee bit on the reckless side, then you must live for your health". Notice I didn't say half, so I'm not going to guarentee you'll be around at a 112. Look at Hal, 73 and been living with blood pressure issues for 20 years. As I recall he has other things he copes with as well.

My mother was plagued with blood pressure problems from the time she was in her early 20s, and she lived to be 86. Coincidently, she must have been around that age when I was born, then she had 5 more boys. I don't think it necessarily runs in the genes. I've had the blood pressure of a teenager for all my 63 years, even when I was well overweight.

Just a year ago I got my wakeup call, blood sugar, got it under control and am feeling better than I have in years. Looking back, that one had been biting me for years. All through it I had good heart tests, good blood pressure and good colesterol. We all have our own little peculiarties.

You take care.

Glad to hear you're doing okay now. High blood pressure is sneaky; the first warning sign is a big problem. I've got mine running about 125/75 now, and that's a big improvement from the 160/100 I had 2 years ago.

I will be 50 this year. Early this year I went to the EMS garage and had my BP checked during my lunch break. It was 150/100. We had our annual health fair at work yesterday. It was back to normal, but I am on MEDs. The company purchased a BP kit to keep for us to use. Nurse said Heart disease and cancer are #1 and 2 killer but stroke is number 3 and can leave you trapped in a worthless body. Think about it A prisioner in your own body, very scary. First one to three hours are critical to recovery. If you think you or someone else have had a stroke do a test. Smile, does one side droop. Raise both arms, Is one weak and not able to be held even to other. Have them repeat a sentence. Do they slur the words. If the person has a problem with any of those three, get help. Don't take chances with your health.
Co-workers wife was hospitalized with BP of 292/177..Unbelivably high.

Mike, I"m very happy you didn"t suffer any long time problems. I just got a wake up call two weeks ago when I failed my stress test. I had my triple by-pass 10 years ago and thought the guarantee had run out. After a catherization last Friday they told me my grafts were okay with just a little plaque build up but the damage to the left venticle had gotten worse. I"m now on another pill to help that and keep my blood pressure down. I"m 77 (in another month) and have decided no more grunting and heavy lifting, but just clean living. Take care of yourself and listen to the doctor. You have to have faith. Dick in the Finger Lake Region of NY.

Being only thirty this year I would have never guessed I was a candidate for high blood pressure, but in february just before I started on my H project I had problems with bad headaches and dizziness for a couple weeks. Went to the doctor found out I had high blood pressure and high colesterol.I thought great! Im only thirty and I have this kind of trouble. But with simple diet changes a smoking habits both have come down into normal ranges.Dont worry I learned my lesson long ago about ignoring symptoms .Hope you get well soon..... You said no sympathy, and I trust enough that you meant it to chance saying that I think if I were going to have a stroke I would have done it when the cow pooped on my head ;-)

I just went through several weeks of tests after someone noticed my pulse was irregular. Blood pressure fine, pulse 60 a minute but every third or fourth beat was early, then a pause before the next one came. It took three regular doctors and a cardiologist to finally admit that they didn't know why and don't worry about it. (Ate up the deductable, too.) This started since my last trip to the medicos, last fall. Things go wrong and if we're not paying attention they may not get better.
Good luck,
Wm

They're probably going to put you on blood pressure medication. I've been on it for 20 years and I'm 73. There's a family history of high blood pressure in our family and my maternal
grandmother died when she was only 52 from a stroke. She had 13 kids too, that may have contributed too. They discovered my late mother had high blood pressure during a routine office call at the doctor's office. He put her on medication and she lived to be 89. So take care
and get yourself a blood pressure monitor. Very easy to take. Hal

Mike: I hope you have a full recovery. Sounds like you didn't suffer any permanent damage. I'm only a year younger then you. Good advice you have given for others. keep us posted on how you are doing. I made and appointment with my doctor all ready, right after I had read your post. May God keep watching over you as he has obvious been doing.

Michael, glad your going to be OK. One of my best friends is my doctor and he scolded me last week when I visited his office and my BP was 150/95, even on my medication. I"m 47 and you have given me renewed reason to seriously monitor my BP. I went back to checking it daily last week. This morning it was 118/75. I can live with that. FYI, 120/80 is considered normal, anything over 140/90 is considered high -- no such thing as "borderline" anymore.

Mike,

Glad to hear you are doing well. You're right....we all have to keep close track of all our vital stats....and keep an even closer eye out for those health problems that our fathers and grandfathers had.
