I have a 1939 M and had a newer style pto in it.I had bought the correct pto and was going to install it and would not work, Mine has a shaft to drive the newer pto. It looks like a sprocket instaid of the 2 ears. Is there an easy way to change that out? I cant find casting codes on the main rear end case to see if they changed it out at one point. I have a 1940 complete rear end and wondering if it is easier just to bolt that one on but then to keep it correct I would need to change bell houseings and axle houseing to keep numbers correct. The 39 houseing has been patched but the 40 hasnt. Are the axle houseings easy to change, can they be pulled with out pulling axles? Does anyone have a parts book that might have a break down of these rear ends that maybe could scan a copy?

hi paul, you need the bottom transmission shaft that has two driving lugs, the later ones used the splined type.
