When I bought the SMD, it was missing and the previous owner said it was a bad injector. I put in a rebuilt injector and still the same problem. This miss has a very distinctive popping noise. The noise is off and on but sounds like a cork popping out. It can be very loud. I fear my problem my be in the head but thought I would seek some advice before I pulled it. Any advice would be appreciated.

With the utmost sympathy (and being the voice of sad experience) whenever a seller sez his whatever just has a minor problem, you need to ask yourself why he hasn"t spent the few dollars to get it fixed so he can get a much better price for smoothly running equipment...

Well , here are things to check . Pull the valve cover off and look for any valves that are not moving because of a broken push rod , broken rockerarm , broken valve spring . Stuck staring valve stuck down or broken staring valve spring . Now if you find nothing there then , i know you don"t want to here this but it is time to pull the head and look for burnt or broken valves . Now on them old diesels it gets even worse as it could be a cracked head or cracked block and they don"t always leak coolant just miss.

I don't know a lot about those diesels, never worked on one, but it does sound to me like a valve, and it could be the compression release valves that are causing the problem. You might want to remove the valve cover and have a look.

You probably need to do a compression test. Do both dry and wet.
1: Do a regular compression test.
2: Place a few ml of oil in each cylinder and do it again.
If you compression remains low on both tests its your valves. If it is higher on the second its your rings.
