Have a real nice running "M" that will not start in the morning or anytime it has been sitting without hitting it with starter fluid. You can choke it till gas runs out and not a pop or hint of trying to start. Hit it with a blast of starter fluid and off to purrin it goes. WHY ?? Has high octane gas now, was told it was low grade fuel, but that didn't change anything. HELP !!

I had this same problem on my 656 Farmall. The tractor would run just fine once it started, but it wouldn't fire at all. On mine, the carburetor was flooding. I replaced the float seat and needle, and now the tractor starts very quickly. You mentioned that you were choking it until it flooded, so I thought your problem might just be the carburetor is flooding.

If all the great ideas below do not produce results, try a new set of spark plugs. Sometimes the plugs will ignite the very combustable ether, but not cold gasoline fumes. Weak spark can also be an issue. The spark should be blue and easily jump 3/8" (with insulated pliers!!) JimN

Just a thought....but they don't need much choke.
Try er with no choke or just a quick jerk of the choke, and throttle at about 1/2.

Somewhere along the line, your fuel/air mixture is off.

Octane has nothing to do with the engine starting, and high octane fuel is a waste of money on low-compression engines like the ones in these old tractors.

Other than octane rating, the fuel is the same "grade" as any other fuel at the gas station.

Old fuel that will not vaporize properly or stay vaporized long enough to get it up through the cold manifold and into the cylinders will cause this.

Well since i cna not check it out myself , the onlything that comes to mind here is the this tractor just does not know how to SUCK . Or your not holden your mouth just wright while tryen to start it . Now it could be that it is low on compression there for it is not sucking hard enough or there is a manifold leak or the choke is not closing off all the way . Pull the intake hose off and put your hand over the carb and crank it and see if it will suck the gas up that way and start . With the age of the tractor and over the years who knows waht has been done to it you darn near have to start at square one and go from there.

Carb hose is off and it seems to suck my hand real hard ?? The second you squirt the starter fluid in it starts right up and runs and sounds real powerful. Will run perfect, doesn't act like it's starving for fuel or anything. Runs perfect. It has me baffled as good as it runs ???? Going to do a compression test this weekend and see what it comes up. What should they be ??

That depends on what is in it for pistons and what bore and just how good of shape everything is but anything over 90 would be good enough or should be if they are real close to being the same .

It is not getting gas from the gas tank. check for fuel flow at the inlet elbow (on carb) first. If you don't have a strong flow there, check the sediment bulb screen and the screen inside the tank on the bulb, and the line from tank to carb for obstructions and crud. If you do have flow at the carb, have the carb cleaned and/or rebuilt (if you don't have a manual or the knowledge to do it yourself). About the only other possibilities would be that the manifold is clogged, or the gas is not turned on at the bulb
