The input bearing housing/shaft assy can be removed without splitting the tractor or pulling the top cover, but it is tight, especially if the tractor has a belly pump. Before you start, check the bearing play in the input shaft. Also, check for oil leakage at the brake housings. If there is, remove the covers and check the brake drum bearings for looseness. If there is, take the time to pull the top cover and check everything out. There is a small roller bearing mounted on the end of the pinion shaft which rides on the inside of the input shaft/gear. It is caged, but when it gets worn the rollers will fall into the trans. case when you remove the input shaft, requiring you to pull the top cover off and fish out the pieces anyway. The pinion shaft ball bearing sometimes requires replacement, and the top cover has to be off to do it. Note: If you have to pull the bearing housings located behind the brake drums, be sure remove the bull gears BEFORE pulling the bearing housings. You will break the bearing housings if you don't pull the bull gears first. Splitting the tractor is not that bad. It can be done in less than an hour.
