I am wondering how hard of a job it is to change out rear axle housings on am M. Ive got a 1939 and need to change out the main transmition houseing due to being chacked and haveing the wrong lower shaft in it. I am going to put one in from a 1940 I have but would like to keep casting codes right. I cant find a casting code on and main transmistion houseing but can on axle houseings. can I just remove the wheel and unblot the housing and just slide it off or do i need to remove it from the bullgear? thanks Paul

It is not a difficult job. I had to remove the axle housings on my H to replace the gasket as it was leaking pretty bad. Here is how I did it, first I removed the PTO, then I reached through the PTO hole and removed the bolt that holds the bull gear on the axle, I placed a small wedge under the bull gear to hold it in place. Then I removed all the bolts that hold the axle housing in place. I was then able to slide the axle housing and axle out together. Replacing the axle housing was easy, as the bull gear was already blocked up in exactly the right position, the axle slid right into the bull gear and the axle housing into the hole in the gear case.

Really, it depends on how mechanical you are. You can pull the PTO out the back, (drain the rear end oil first) then remove the single bolt and cap on the inside end of axle leaving the bull gear in place and slide the housing out, (I used wood shim stock to wedge the bull gear up and keep it in place for reassembly) also (may have to push the axle out using the end bolt between the two axles) But it can be a big job lining up the spines when reassembly occurs!! Their is only so much room to reach through the PTO hole so use your head and it can be done. I changed both sides in about 4 1/2 hrs just last fall. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Seems to me the casting code on the main transmission housing is on the belt pulley side (right side sitting on the tractor) towards the front.

Randy is right about removing bull gear through PTO opening but getting heavy gear back on axle working through PTO opening can test your religion.

Just a thought, It may be possible to wedge a pair of (appropriately chosen bolts under each of the bull gears such that the gear is held in its current location vertically. If a crutch tip on a stick was used between the bull gears would it keep them from tipping into the cavity. Just new thinking on an old issue from an avoidance perspective.

You do not have to remove the trans cover to unbolt the bull gears, the bull gear bolts are accessable through the PTO mounting hole once the PTO assembly is removed.

The bull gear has to be removed, in order to do that the top of the transmission has to be removed. I just replaced the housing on my W6 and it took two of us and an overhead crane. Not hard to do, just heavy.
