I have an ealy 1939 M that I am going to restore and looking for opionions as to what I should do. My transition case is patched just below the bull gear and also have the new style lower shaft to drive the PTO. My options are 1. Raplace the whole transmion with one I have from a 1940 and change axle houseings, cover and bell houseing
2. take all the guts out of the 1940 transmition and put them in anther 1939 case I just bought
3 take the guts out of the 1939 and finding the right shaft and installing in the uncracked case

all of this is alot of work, just wondering if this was your tractor wich way you would lean tward going. This tractor is all correct and complete with all the right 1939 stuff thanks Paul

It almost sounds to me like you are somewhat worried about the “originality police” coming around and criticizing you for either the band-aid approach or not having the correct date of casting code.

Since it sounds like you have all the parts, I would put it to all 1939 parts and make it as original as possible. If you have never had a rear end apart, this will be an educational experience, plus you will gain some bragging rights as to both originality and knowledge of how that rear end actually works.

If I was just going to use it for work, I’d leave it the way it is…

Our M has a patch there as well. The reason we have the tractor is that the dealer mounted it into the mounted corn picker that we bought(we had no tricycle tractor to mount on it). It pulled that heavy mounted New Idea picker for over 18 years with the wheels set all the way out to the ends of the axle shafts and pulling gravity boxes of corn along behind. It never broke yet. If it is fixed properly, it is almost as good as the orgininal case, and for show use, will almost definitely outlive you.

Paul one of my H's had that happen, I had it welded and the guy did a real good job. If you are confident in the repair I wouldn't change trans housings, use it and see what time will tell, your other options are a lot of work, how's the rest of the tractor, ie everything else sound and worth the effort? Change over will be a big job, good luck, you've got the spare rear anyway if it has to be changed...Mike in Exeter Ontario

rest of the tractor is really sound. Motor runs great. found all the missing stuff to make her complete right down to the right seat. I plan on restoring it and taking it to some shows. will keep my 39 f-20 company when not in use

If you want it to be perfect in external castings, replace the components into the 39 housing. What is a little work and learning. Other wise leave it as is. My two cents includes having a differential technition set the ring/pinion.
