I'm doing an overhaul on my 400, I have the tractor split and I'm ready to replace the rear main seal. I have the seal, I'm assuming that you need to trim the extra felt that sticks up past the seal block? Any other tips on this install would be appreciated

Jeh best if you don't put oil on till you stuf the felt in the holder first because the oil will swell the felt and mahe it hard to stuf. And yes don't trim the felt.

Thanks, there were no instructions with seals. They stick up about 1/4 on each side, so they will draw toghether ok with that much sticking up?

Do not trim the seals at all!!!! It will leak.

Basically all you do is soak the seal halves in oil for a bit. I left mine over night. Then install them in the seal retainer. I over hanged mine to cover the area where the 2 halves come together. Then install the top half of the retainer and gasket. After that put the bottom half up to the top half and use the cap screws ( shown by arrow in photo) to draw the 2 halves together. This compresses the seal around the shaft. Then tighten the 2 bottom bolts on the retainer.

There should be directions with the package that the seal came in. I did the one on my MD last winter and it said not to trim it. Several years ago I did aa W-6 and trimmed it? Maybe someone else has a sure fire method.
