Hi all, I need some help identifying this sickle bar mower that I got with my Super A. I need to get a manual for it as well as some parts to restore it to working condition again.

The Pitman arm, knives, and PTO shaft are all missing and I'm hoping to figure out what manual to buy so I can better identify what I need or where I might be able to buy the parts.

Here are some pictures. I know you remove the drawbar and mount it on the back but more that that I don't know much. The sickle is 7' itself. Thanks for any help!

I had a simular problem, missing PTO shaft. My IH dealer helped me build a new one. Had to order the square stock as it's slightly rectangular, but the parts were available if you can't find an old one. Jeff

I think it is an A-21. Looks like you can almost read it on the cast hinge.

Jim: While I have to agree with what your seeing, I see it also. At the same time I will chalange you to tell me difference between A-16 and A-21. It might be hand lift versus pull rod for SA hydraulic lift, but I've seen the hydraulic lift on A-16 mowers. I think they were conversions done after a guy traded his A off for a SA.

For all practical purposes, I don't think it will matter a whole lot which manual he has.

Hugh,
As you pointed out in another post of this thread, much of the mower is the same regardless of the exact model. Someone with a manual for any one of them would be able to do nearly any required maintenance and adjustments. The differences between an A-16 and A-21 that I can see in the pictures are:
1) Hydraulic lift parts (lifting crank, lifting arm etc.) in place of the hand lift parts.
2) Single lifting spring rather than double.
3) Bolted tilting bracket at hinge rather than hand wheel.
4) Quick attach drawbar with attaching cam and one diagonal brace rather than 2.

Likewise, I don't think it is the heaver A-24 mower because of the single lifting spring and single drawbar brace.

Mark: Your mower is a model A-16. Cutter parts are available at TSC and most other farm stores. I expect they have the pitman arm as well. PTO shaft may be a bit more difficult if you want to make it look original. I expect you can buy a U joint to fit tractor pto and the same to fit mower shaft. From there you could add a generic telescoping shaft.

You could also go used with the pto shaft as most IH mowers from 1930 to 1960 used the same shaft. Some lengths may be different, but you can always cut a long one.

HI Hugh

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate that. I will make a run to TSC tomorrow to look around for some parts. I looked on a manual website and it looks like they have a 16A mower manual listed. No. 16A, 16B, 16HM Mower I guess that is it!

once again thanks very much.

You'll probably see more posts from me on this implement as I try to reassemble all the parts.

Mark: Those model 16 mowers are all basically the same mower. All the letter indicates is the tractor they are designed to fit. Mounting hardware is about the only difference.

Most of the power train and actual cutter bar parts on all IH mowers between the 1930s and 1960 are the same.

I had one exactly like that - fixed it up and sold it in running condition. I forget the model But it was a J-26 or something like that - Not sure about the letter, but the 26 is right. You can get the pitman at Tractor Supply for less than 10 bucks. I let two extra bars with knives go with the sale.

I wanted to add the following part marks if that helps anyone identify a year or something. These probably are not 100% correct but it was the best I could do.

M2041
1B735
MA-812
M-2566

Thanks again for any help on finding the parts I need and a manual.
