Last spring I purchased a 185 lo-boy to help around our hobby farm, (snow removal and cut grass) also to provide a little more grunt than a riding mower for hauling brush etc. Promptly ended up spending $1700.00 to get the hi lo tranny working, never got to mow lawn last year. Mowed once this year and now I am stuck in second gear. Is this typical of these 185's, did I get a lemon, or do I need to find a new mechanic? We own a woodworking business and I do not have time to become a tractor mechanic. Always heard that cub's were pretty dependable. I sold a Super C to buy this and I am now wondering if I did the right thing.

Cubs are "pretty dependable" but like any other mechanical marvel, things wear out. The tractor is, after all, around 30 years old. If it had a hard life before you, there could be many other problems with it just waiting to rear their ugly heads. That's how antique tractors are... You pays your money and you takes your chances.

If the shifter just flops around, the fix is pretty simple. What happened is that the ball on the end of the shift handle slipped out of the shifting forks. Take the shifter off, and use a screwdriver to center the shifter fork for 2nd and 3rd.

Since this is stuck in gear, the shift fork may be bent/broke. You need to pull the shift cover off to see if this is the problem.

If this is it, the fix is simple and fast.
