Farmall H, top cover off tranny, now what

Removed the top cover so I could service the shifter rails, as they was stuck(removing the belt pully attachment and hitting the rails with a dead blow hammer had zero effect). Have the rails working nicely. BUT... there are pieces of a roller bearing scattered throughout the tranny case. I visually cannot see any bearing all mangled in place. How can I find the failed bearing?
Secondly, the transmission/axles leak like mad. So, who has replaced those seals, and I should do it now that I have the top cover off, right?

Are you saying ball bearings or needle type. I do not have a H but super A. But there is 10 ball bearing type bearings in the tranny and final drives on the super A if my memory hasn't failed. Looks like your going to have to do some work.

It is hard to say where to stop on these old tractors, but I would check the bull pinion bearings and seals while you have the cover off; especially if you take the bull gears and axles out. If the inside bull pinion bearing needs replacement, the bull gears have to come out to get the carrier out to replace the bearing. This is done much easier with the cover off.

As cowman said the only roller bearing I can think of is on the front of the top transmission shaft. You can�t see it unless you pull the input shaft (thus cowman�s suggestion about wiggling up and down) and housing out of the top of the case. If you have to replace it a rubber band around it helps keep the rollers in place during assembly.

If you really want to be though, check all the bearings and replace all the seals. They are not cheap these days, but neither is the gear oil that you will be putting back in it.

If the axle seals are leaking, now is a good time to replace them. You'll need to remove the bull gears and the axle housings. I&T manual gives the proceedure.

The only roller bearing I can think of is the imput pilot bearing. grab the top shaft and see if the front end has up and down play in it.

Can't remember, but i think there are 4 roller bearings in the differential.
