Plow adjustment

I'm going out later today to plow a little patch with my rusty 14 and an old semi-mount five bottom plow. I pulled it in the shed last night and the bolt stop on the tail wheel was broken off. You can adjust this bolt to stop the tail wheel, which runs in the last furrow, from going to deep when you lower it with the hydraulics.

How can I adjust this in the shop? Should the wheel run at exactly the same depth as the last botton, a little deeper or a little higher? This is something simple I never thought of before. I'll be durned if I can picture it in my head how deep the wheel should run as compared to the last plow bottom.

I'm sure a lot of you guys who have plowed a lot can set me straight.

There is virtually ZERO pressure on the tailwheel when the plow is in the ground. The depth gauge wheel on the side is what controls the depth of a semi-mount plow in the rear, and carries all the down pressure.

Adjust the tail wheel such that it will drop down AT LEAST even with the rear bottom.

Nat2,

Yes, that makes perfect sense, but I don't have a depth gauge wheel on the side. I think it would be a lot simpler if I did. The plow is an old Oliver 5 - 16. I think the number is 545. This is one of those things I just never thought of before, and it makes me feel sort of simple minded. I'm go'in out in about an hour and if it doesn't work like I want I'll just wrench on it in the field. I agree with your advice and I'll start out with it even with the back plowshear.
