Plow Question Cant get it to BITE?

Go buy yourself a new set of points. then rebuild the old ones, having the new ones as a guide. No point in rebuilding the old ones if you don't know what they should look like.

You can also buy used points from auctions or sellers.

But heres the real thing: an education costs money. Go buy a set of new points to see what they do and what they look like and then you will know what you are doing. AND if you are only doing a small garden these new points will last you many years.

ALSO- Make sure you have the plow hitch set right. The hitch/tongue adjustment is just as important as the depth setting. If you are using a three point drawbar and you do not have it low enough the plow will float.

I don't know much about JD plows, but on the older trailer plows that IH made, the plow depended on the share to pull it into the ground.

There are a lot of adjustments that can be made to the older plows too to make them work right. Without actually seeing it, it's hard to say what the problem may be. If you know an older, retired farmer in your area, he may be able to look at it and tell you exactly what you need. That's what I did. Plowing is as much an art as it is a science and the fellow I asked taught me a lot about it.

Plow points (shares) are a cheap investment and if you go to tractor supply or a temco, you should be able to save some money. Your friendly JD dealer can probably supply the points and rob you in the process...they do me everytime i am forced to shop there! But, worn out points are just that...go buy new ones and get your plowing done. Another factor is this time of year, the ground is getting dryer and harder and it gets worse. You'll be amazed at how your plow works with fresh points.
