Dating A McCormick-Deering Hay Press

Our club has received an old McCormick-Deering stationary hay press with an International LB 3-5 hp engine. The engine stand has welds but the rest of the machine does not. Did International ever have a hay press which was belt-driven by a tractor? We are wondering if our horse-drawn press may have been converted to engine power at some point. The IHC LB"s were manufactured between 1941 and 48 but this press appears to be older.

Where could I find information on the McCormick-Deering hay presses?

..."In 1937,IH introduced the No. 15 baling press. Designed for belt or motor power, this was one of the last IH stationary presses.....using either a continental Y-69 motor or an International LB"(or LA)"...3-5h.p..."
"Over 9,000 LA 3-5 horsepower engines were built between 1935 and 1938."

My 2...Many hay press companies bought LA and LB engines then resold them on their presses(Lilliston, mnfg. in Georgia, for instance).
IH also put LA"s on the #15 press(which is most likely what you have if it"s an IH press). If it was original motor powered, it would have a pulley connected to a long lever that tensioned the belt. I have never personally seen a belt-powered one with this tensioner pulley.

Yes, that is what ours looks like. I should take off the valve cover to see if it is an LA or LB, as the tag is missing. Thanks for giving us the information.

Larry

The frame says 18 T. I don"t know if that is the part number or the model number. Fortuately the original decals and red paint still exist on the machine. It was stored for 50 years in a barn.
