Hello! I'm new to this forum. I've been a Ford "N" and Jubilee owner for years, but recently bought a '49 Cub for my wife. This tractor has the "J4" magneto on it and I'm giving it a tune up. So far...not so bad. The part that has stuck in my craw, though, is the price of a new rotor. Those little buggers are EXpensive!

My question(s) is this...do most Cub owners keep the J4? Was there a different setup offered in '49? (I should mention here that I prefer to keep things original on all my tractors). Are there still a lot of these J4's around? What years were they used?

Any help would be much appreciated!

I checked the pinion and it is, indeed, sharp. In fact one tooth is about gone altogether! Thanks for the heads up! Now...I can't find carter and grunwald anyplace. Do you have a link? Thanks!

Thanks for your prompt replies! I've checked out FarmallMagneto.com and bookmarked it...I have a feeling I'll be back there a number of times.

It sounds like there are a lot of J4's in use, then...I'll keep mine and rebuild (or have it rebuilt) when necessary.

As for the price of the rotor...dang...$40. Well...until you get the "lay of the land", you're bound to step in some cow flop here and there.
