I just installed one of the new reproduction battery boxes on the SMTA. At the left rear there is a threaded bushing. I assume for the positive cable. What sort of threaded male piece goes into this? Does the ground come out of this hole also and connect to one of the rear cover bolts? Looks like this box is made for one of the LONG (about) 13.5 inch 6 volt batteries? Last question, which new repro seat color is correct for 54 SMTA?

The ground (positive cable if still factory 6V) should bolt to the center rear bolt on top of a short 1/2" long piece of pipe on the bolt. Jake

The ground cable is bolted to one of the mounting bolts inside the battery box. I think the proper location is actually the single bolt in the center rear of the box.

If your tractor is still on 6V, then get the biggest 6V battery that will fit in the box, with plenty of overhead clearance. A 12V battery can be much smaller.

If I remember correctly, our SMTA came with a group 2 6volt battery.

The answer to your last question is silver. The red and white was invented by the aftermarket. I think the battery box is long because the seat mounts on it. You can use a smaller battery and block it or something so that it doesn't rattle around.

That is for a 1/2" pipe for the tail light to mount on to. The Ground usually stays inside the box, I bolt mine to 1 of the mounting bolts.
