Had the engine off to change rear main seal, found pto drive gear off, so I replaced it(The PTO did not work when I bought it,,,,yea I know but the price was right)Now the PTO won't cut off. I adjusted it by the book, but that only lugs the engine down. Took the unit apart, found the bearing retainer nut off, replaced it thinking "Problem solved" wrong!! With the engine not running and the handle in the center, and with a rod through the shaft, it acts right, as the shaft moves freely in both directions, but crank it up and it runs forever. (cant hold it) Any ideas? Thanks

I believe it is similar to my SMTA unit. There are 2 brake bands, one is engaged when pto is in gear and the other when it is out. It appears the out one is not working properly. If the band is working you should be able to turn the adjusting screw so that the pto will not turn with lever in neutral(tractor off)You say it pulls the tractor down when lever moved foreward. There may be some problem inside the unit that it will not stop when the brake is applied.

I have the cover off, as well as the bands, and the first drum. Does the second drum come out without tearing down the rearend and draining the oil?
