Super M stuck in 4th or 5th

Hi guys...I've got a Super M that has decided to lock up in either 4th or 5th. I've removed the shift lever and all the rails are aligned in neutral. The end of the shifter engages all gears and it seems like I can shift it into all 5 gears and reverse. Tractor starts with the clutch depressed and bogs as if in 4th or 5th gear when released. I cannot roll the tractor. Do I have two gears engaged? I have not pulled the top plate yet, just in case there is an easier fix, which is why I now post this question! If I do need to pull the plate, what do I need to do to fix it and prevent it from happening again?

Thanks for your advice guys. I'm gonna start by jacking each wheel and take it from there.

Thoughts also go to a possible foreign object jammed between the transmission case & one of the bull gears. This would be ruled out , though, by jacking one wheel at a time & trying to roll each rear wheel. Same with brake problems. Another problem could be the differential area with a bad bearing or foreign object lodged in the gears.

We had one of the brake return springs break & get caught between the moving brake " disc " & the brake housing on our 450. Acted just like what you are describing. It's a lot easier to go at a brake thing than the transmission. Another thought-- Possible axle bearing locked up? They usually don't get locked up without advance warning , though.

If you put the shift lever in neutral, start tractor with clutch in, then let clutch out, and it drives away,you are obviously in a gear.

I'd jack up a wheeel, maybe try both wheels. Make sure it isn't something in the brake. But make absolutly sure the shifter rails are in neutral before you tear into it. and "bogs down like in 4th or 5th" ain't the same as stuck in 2 gears. Does it move at all? If it is 2 gears it will be locked up solid. Try shifting into all the gears. Chances are you will find one it is stuck in.

It won't roll with or without the clutch depressed. However, it does rock, like it's stuck in gear. If the brakes were locked it wouldn't rock.

I think Jim is right, I'll have to pull the top plate and see what I find.

I cannot think of one reason, or even a check, to avoid pulling the cover. If the tractor will not roll in (apparent) neutral, and it bogs when the clutch is released, it must be in the forks/rails, or gears. Every other possibility either allows the tractor to roll in neutral, or run in neutral with the clutch out. Even if it is a bearing, it will need the top off of the trans. Look through the belt pulley gearbox mount hole to see further into the system. Though not the best vantage point to see, it is much better than what is seen in the shifter hole. Best of luck, JimN

I have had the same trouble with my H. To get it unstuck I pulled the tractor with my truck ever so slightly while in gear but with the tractor off. I pulled it about 2 feet and started it right back up with no problem. It has happen about 3 times in the last 3 years. Still don"t know what the cause is.
