I have an old 3 1/2hp Briggs & Stratton on a 22" push mower I use around the yard.

It runs really smooth but the last couple years it has been running real hot and going through a spark plug on every use (about 30 min)

The plug gets hot and breaks down and quits. I put in another plug and it fires right up for another 20 minutes.

Anyone know of a plug that can take the heat?

So instead of fixing the real problem, you want to mask the problem with a different plug that will "take the heat???" Sorry, but that doesn't make much sense!

The engine is trying to tell you something. It's saying, "I'm SICK! Please fix me!" If you do find a plug that will continue to work when the engine is overheated like that, the engine won't last much longer.

It may be as simple as the shroud being packed full of grass clippings and other crud, though that should've started on fire by now.

Most likely, you're dealing with a maintenance issue. You need to give your engine a tune up.

You also might need to adjust, and/or clean, the carburetor. Air cooled engines don't like being run too lean (not enough fuel). That's how they get hot.

Then again, the engine may be just plain shot.

I'm with riverbend. If it has points ignition, I believe the condenser is breaking down when it gets hot. When you stop the mower to change the plug, this allows the condenser to cool and it will run until it gets hot again. I would change points and condenser. I had this experience with a B&S water pump engine. Hope this helps.

If you haven't already done so, remove the blower housing and check for dried grass, dust, dirt, bird seed, mouse nest, etc that might be blocking airflow over the cylinder head. I wish I'd taken pictures of some of the stuff I've found under the blower housing of air cooled engines over the years.

I don't think that the problem is the spark plug.

Is the spark plug stark raving white when you take out ? Electronic ignition or points ?

I cleaned it all out and tightened head and intake bolts.

Its points ignition.
