A neighbor recently came into possession of (nd I"m thinking of buying) an h s/n 1177xx that has a pony tank and odd manifold. The stack is attached by two bolts through a flange that thread into the top of the manifold like on an 806 gasser, and the manifold is huge, but the carb intake looks to be about the same size as on the B. I"ve never seen one like this on an h and my uncle thinks it"s a kerosene or some kind of multi-fuel tractor. The thing started but ran rough (with gas in the main tank), the tin"s straight but could use some freshening. Any idea what I"m looking at? There"s no letters stamped in the s/n just 6 numerical digits.

The only thing oddball is that it still has the starting tank (about 7/8 of a gallon) and distillate/kerosene manifold still on it.

My H still had the manifold, but it was rusted beyond repair. Many of the earlier H's were set up to run on distillate/kero as it was cheaper than gasoline.

The first three letters should be "FBH" to signify that it is an H.

Was there any particular approach to switching over to kerosene from gas? Or just turn the kero on and the gas off? I'm guessing running on gas instead of kero won't hurt it? I'm rethinking this now I was going to turn it down but maybe not now.

There were adjustments to make on the manifold to heat up the intake side to burn the kero/distillate.

No changes need to be made to run on gasoline. I'm sure the manifold is already set for it. Or if you are concerned, buy a new manifold.

Gas won't hurt it at all.

ok, I'll have to get a good manual if I decide to take it. I don't think kerosene is all that more expensive than gas around home. Beats deisel right now, gas has dropped 35 cents and they've still got deisel at 3.10 a gallon in erie and they say they're not gouging. My dad's been getting it for 2.99 in saegertown but it's still too much.

You don't HAVE to run it on kerosene or "distillate." It will run fine on gas. Heck, better!

Does it by chance still have the radiator shutters, as well as crank to adjust them. If so you have a lucky find.

Run it on gasoline. I don't even know the tractor but I will still guarantee you that the tractor has already been running on gas for at least the last 30 years. Running an H on kerosene or distillate was a real hassle, the operating temperature had to be kept right up to the point that the engine was almost too hot. In addition to the adjustments on the manifold, the tractor also had radiator shutters, which may or may not still be in place, and if they are in place, they probably don't work. Stick with gasoline and you will be much happier.

the s/n line on the data plate does have something like mfh or hmf or fmh or fbh or something like that at the start of the line.

Distallate models lack the "X1" after the serial number

That would be FBH, which is the prefix for ALL H Farmalls, whether they are kerosene, distillate, or gasoline.

The serial number should end X3 if it is a kero burner. Will run on petrol ok as I do with mine, but they run sweeter on kero when hot (and you have to have them HOT!)
