Leave it black, there is less chance of the gas fumes destroying the new paint, unless you want to wait until it is completely cured.

Letter series tractors were almost completely assembled, except for tires, then slathered with RED paint.

Guess what color the gas cap got painted. Yup, red. Fan belts? Red. Hoses? Red. Axles? Red. Radiator? Red. Spark plugs? Red. Distributor cap? Red. You name it, it was red.

The spark plugs were installed after painting, or else covered some way. The axles were not painted, but were covered with a cardboard tube while painting. The distributer cap was left black, I don't belive the distributer was installed until after painting. The plug wires were not painted -- you tend to post incorrect opinions, not facts.

I've wondered about the axles. You see lots of collectors paint them black, but shipping pictures I have of them, and early advertisements are mostly all red (apparently)

They were not intentionally painted at the factory, that is not to say they didn't have some overspray on them, though.

Color photography was not yet invented when most of those early ads were made. The pictures were taken in black and white, and then the color was added at the printers. That's why the axles, mufflers, and a few other things are red in the ads.

This topic seems to come up frequently as to what was painted red. I know that my dad bought a 1953 Super H new and the axles were definitly not painted any color.

I have a couple of them, they all came in black. I've seen some painted red though.
