Question, is it possible to replace this bearing without removing rear axle housing. Rear seals are leaking so i put tractor in shop and pulled rear wheel, cover found shot seal and worn bearing. IT manual says to remove axle housing to change bearing, with major undertaking to do so.

I did both my H and the SMTA. Fortunately I did the H first and found that lining up that bull gear with the axle was a little (lot) tricky. Now the SMTA bull gear is about twice the weight of the H. So I made a wooden spacer block, just the size of the space between the gear and the bottom of the case. Wedged it in there before pulling the axle. It took about 10 seconds to slide that axle and housing right back in there, as the bull gear was still there perfectly aligned. I'd replace both inner and outer. You can tell if there is wear there if you get a "lurch" when you apply the brakes.

Not that big of a job , drain the rear end and remove the PTO put the wheel back on place a 3/4 drive ratchet and socket thru the PTO and use the wheel to loosen the retaining bolt and remove the bolt . Next remove the wheel and attach a hoist to the rear axel and unbolt it and pull it out and let the bull gear fall down and replaboth inner and outer while your there . when going back together place the gskt on the rear end housing with Hy tach or spray copper coate or trim cement and use the rear axel and housing to sorta fish the bull gear back on the end of the axel and slide it bac together working the bull gear back all the way on the axel with the retaining bolt then install the rear wheel and use it to tighten up the retaing bolt and put the PTO back in and refill your done should take around three hours not counting Barley pop breaks.

The 300 is just like the H in this way,you should remove the top of the tranny and remove the bull gear and press the axle and housing out after you remove all the bolts from mounting flange on axle housing. Its apretty big job if done right I have seen some short cuts but dont recommend them too many things can go wrong if you cant see exactly what you are doing....RBF

Pulling the transmission cover is way tomuch work Even on a H , the less work i have to do when doing a job the better i like it . Now for someone that has hands the size of a Grizzly bear's paw then on a H ya may have to but i am lucky enough that i can get into the retaining bolt even on a H thru the PTO .
