I had the super out cutting with a 5ft. finish mower was out for about an hour the PTO has always made a little noise, but now I've got a nasty noise coming from the trans makes noise when I'm sitting still with the clutch out and goes away when I push it in. any thoughts on what to look for first?

Try to isolate the noise may be from the throw out bearing behind the clutch also.

flem: Sitting still with clutch out, transmission obviously in neutral, but you didn't say whether pto was engaged or not. I'm assuming it is engaged, that being the case, very likely the oil slinger gear that supplies oil to the pto and belt pulley is the problem.

Check the oil/grease level. The fill-to plug is on the left hand side behind the brake rod.

Its got oil in it and it makes the noise whether the PTO is engaged or not, the noise seems to be coming from just behind the shifter

the sound is definitely a rotational noise but it is not constant it almost sounds like a chipped gear but I don't know why it would make the noise off and on and even when the tractor is in neutral
I'm planning on looking at this weekend but was hioping to get some good ideas where to look.
