I'm working on finishing up some 50's and 60's Farmalls and need advice on how best to clean and brighten up the Farmall, TA, and number emblems. These are all in very good shape but dull and faded from many years exposed to the elements. Any tricks to restore the shine and cut the grime off?? Some of these are not available in reproductions that I know of. Working on 240, 340, 404, and 460. Thanks for any and all help. Migraine

The best stuff I have come across is a product called Never Dull. It's wadded up high tensile cotton type material soaked in a solution. Comes in a blue can. When I was in the military, we used it to shine up brass, stainless steel, chrome etc. I've used it on motorcyle chrome and of course, Farmall emblems. You rub the stuff on and let it work in a bit (the grime and surface crud will lather up into a black film of sorts) then you wipe it off with a clean rag and it polishes right up. Makes those emblems sparkle.

I have had relatively good luck with toothpaste and a toothbrush. Initially clean with the paste and brush, hotwater rinse than use a soft rag and polish with the toothpast to a shine.

Some are possibly stainless steel, and can be cleaned and somewhat buffed up with a dremel type tool and buffer wheels, with compound on them. do not get agressive. If some are steel with chrome plating, they should be treated to toothpaste and brushing, rinse well and brush, dried, then the exposed steel backing should be painted with krylon rust preventing paint to preserve the non-exposed surfaces. If chrome is comming off of them, the only way to repair is to have tripple chrome plate put on professionally (pricy). Chrome does not stick to steel well at all, but it sticks to nickel, nickel does not stick to steel but it sticks to copper, copper sticks to both steel and nickel. So it is cleaned, to steel copper plated, nickel plated, then chromed. That is why Quality hand tools with some wear on them show coppery undertones in the edges of the wear.

Migraine; First, clean them down with a good soap solution or automotive liquid cleaner...dry off...then use a small amount of boiled linseed oil on a small soft rag and wipe them down carefully.Dispose of the rag after letting it sit out overnight to dry. Do not put directly in the garbage after use, as the rag will spontaneous combust...we don't want any fires !! After a day or two, when the linseed oil has dried on the emblems...coat with clear enamel or
automotive clear. Varnish works too, but will turn "yellow" with time. Good luck on 'er!! Jim
