international aos6 gearbox problems

I have an interesting problem that doesn't make sense! An early international Australian model Aos6 will only move forward in top gear only when the shifter is in supposed nuetral! It appears to "feel" like it will go into each of the gears but when the clutch is raised the engine stalls and not move forward (or reverse) in any gear. You can feel it go into each of the gears but it will only go forward in top gear when in Nuetral posistion.I had drove it into posistion to do some tuning to the engine about two weeks ago - no problems engaging gears and all worked ok - but after some general engine tuning (tappets, spark plugs, points) - nothing to do with gearbox I have this situation.Pulled shift lever out of gearbox and the sectors appear to work. Added some gear oil, in case it didn't like being in the open, to no effect.I know the engine work has nothing to do with the problem and may be due to the tractor sitting in the open for about 4 weeks (maybe?)Anyone have ANY idea?

It almost sounds like you are hung up in 5th gear. When you had the shifter out did you make sure all of the slots were lined up in neutral.
If the tip of the shifter wears it will hang up, but you probably knew that. oh well good luck.

Yeah , slots were lined up, just got me beat how it can be ok one minute and no go the next. I could understand if i was using it and i had to jam it into gear or "something went bang" while using, but to drive it ok, park it for a while, then try and use it, dont make sense.

Take the shifter lever back off and look down in there. Make sure all the slots in the shifter rails are aligned. I bet when you put the shifter back in, you accidentally knocked it out of alignment.

If that's not the case, then you've got major surgery ahead. You need to open the transmission case and figure out why the slider gear for top gear is no longer attached to the shifter fork.

Just sitting in the open wouldn't have caused this. Most tractors spend their entire lives outdoors. Some rust away, unused, for years and this doesn't happen.

Maybe some kids were climbing around on the tractor when you weren't looking, playing with the levers?

Indeed an interesting problem. I assume you meant it will go forward in neutral or 5th. It might be worth trying 4th gear again.

There is always the possibility the fork has broken off the 4-5 shifter rail. Make sure you try it in 4th gear. If it moves forward in 5th when shifted to 4th then that would seem to be the problem, that the 4th-5th slider is not being moved. If moving the shift lever to 4th locks it up then the slider must be moving so it is not locked in 5th. That would indicate some sort of problem with the countershaft but I can't figure out what it might be.

IF the constant mesh gear is stripped AND the PTO or countershaft is locked up (maybe due to a tooth off the constant mesh gear) you could have what you are experiencing except it should not drive in neutral, only in 5th. You might try running it is 5th with the PTO engaged. If the PTO does not turn you have learned something else.

It sounds like pulling the top cover may be in order.

One way a tractor goes bad sitting is a child or childish adult jerking on the lever while engaged in gear.

Looked again - the selectors were not totally aligned and I 've been told someone was on it "for a drive". Had me bugged for a while as far as i was aware i was the only one to use it. Go to show we cant be sure all the time!
Thanks all for your help and information.
