Year and a half ago I had a valve job done on my IH 656 Hydro. It had a bad exhaust valve on #5 cyl. Bringing it home from baling hay last Sunday noticed a vibration (suspected a bad miss). Pulled the plugs, compression test and #5 cyl. again. Put air to cyl. and it is exh. valve again. Anyone had similar problems and any ideas why again?
Thanks!

well first off what type of oil ya running in the engine ???? next have you checked the timming at full throttel ??? are you running 87 octain gas it is , do you have valve stem seal on the valves . when was the last time that you adjusted the valves and what plugs ya running in it as i have been thru this and the cure is what ya don't want to hear . Run low ash stright 30 weight next run 93 octain gas check total ing. timming at full throttel make sure that the valves are adjusted to spec. and the cooling system is doing it's job .

I started out using 15W45 oil and just changed it. Not sure what you mean when you say low ash?
I was also using a lead additive and 89 octane. Do I need to quit with the additive and go to the higher octane?
I have not checked the timming; however, I did find the fuel mixture way lean. I have bought the next range colder plug and will do a quick run and another comp. test (wet test) to see just how bad. Sort of hoping against hope that there was something under the valve, carbon maybe. Are you saying that it might be possible that the valve adjustment could be far enough out on just that one valve to cause it to have the 10-15lbs of compression?
All of the things you have mentioned are cheap compared to the time and cost of another valve job, which may be where I am headed.
Thanks for the help!!

The low ash oil i am talken about is the case I h low ash for gas tractors . Over the years i have talked with a bunch of old I H mechanics and we have touched the oil thing many times and they all told me the same thing to use the Case I H low ash 30 w. and have had good resualts . Now if you thing that you ate a valve then ya probably did , as we ate three valves in three times on the grindermixer grinding hog feed . So you will have to see . As far as the Lead additive scrap it it is a waist of money and i don't care who's it is go with the 93 octain gas and check your timming for full advance and make sure the centrifcal advance is working inside the dist. You adjust the timming at full throttel to what ever the book sayes for that engine . Make sure that the cooling system is clean and that you have a thermostat in it . If ya have to pull the head make sure that the valve guides are not wore out and if so replace them and use valve stem seals . When doing a valve adjustment look carefully at the rocker arm for ware pattern and try to keep the feeler gauge off the high spots or have the rockers reground to get rid of the ware so that they are flat as it is hard to get a good adjustment if you end up bridgeing and go over the adjustment twice as you will always find a couple that are not just wright.

Thanks again for the info. Will have to look for the IH low ash as I have never heard of it. Maybe NAPA.
Getting ready to pull it in the shop and take it apart.. again.
Any reason you can think of that you had to replace exhaust valves three times? This could get real expensive as well as just being a pain.

Is this a gas or gas tractor? We had same problems with a gas 656 hydro. We only used it for hay. Had a burnt valve, 3 years later(less than 1000 hrs) it blew a head gasket. Had the head rebuilt and next summer it did just what you said. Started missing bad, checked it out and found part of the valve gone. Sold it like that. I have heard reasons from nolead in the fuel, too much valve lash, and on and on. We solved the problem by buying a diesel.
