I have a 1943 H that is a very good running tractor. I would like to use it on the small farm. A 2-bottom plow would be nice. Am I restricted to using a little genius? Could probably find a decent one eventually. Not as concerned with originality/authenticity as I just would like to use it. Also looking for a pull behind bush hog, shouldn't be hard to find one. Another idea I have is to maybe get a planter for corn/beans. I'm looking for any suggestions for any of these ideas. I am pretty new to this, so any help is appreciated.

I planted 6 food plots, from 2 1/2 to 5 acres in size, for wildlife thid spring. The plow and the disc were never hooked up. Seed bed preparation was done with a 7 foot Woods brush bull and 25 gallon sprayer on the 4 wheeler and lots of BucannerII herbicide. Then no till planted, sorgham, peas, corn. I planted 2 1/2 plot on one piece of pasture that the ground had NEVER been worked in over 50 years, if ever! I use an older JD 7000 4rw planter. You can buy them all over for about 1200 dollars. AND that plot looks as good as any of them.I did use a vibratine cultivator through the sweet corn patch before planting. Look for an older JD 290 planter, for garden work. You can pull it with a 4 wheeler, or the H, or even your golf cart .

An 8 Ft wheel disk is what I use to pull with the old H I have and it was a load.an 8 ft drag disk is just about right as they do not cut as deep, the 2-14 plow is just the H.

"Am I restricted to using a little genius?"

That made me chuckle. Of course you aren't, unless for some reason you have some very violent "Correct Police" in your area. :)

Glad I can provide entertainment! Seriously though, a friend brought his old green tractor over with a little 2-bottom to plow some small areas for me this spring. He said that he had to go Pennsylvania to find it (we are in Illinois). I know old tractors were designed for them to be able to use only their implements, so I didn"t know. I"m learning already and am glad I found this site!

Any 2-14 trip plow or single acting single hose operated hydraulic plow will be good behind your tractor. There are many on the market of various brands. Two things to look for one is a good clean/tight trip mechanism, and axles. The other is good landslides, points, moldboard/frog, coulters, and shares. If you don't know what these are, you should do some research to get aquained with the terms. These are wear points, and can be expensive, or hard to find for some plows.

A six foot wheel type pull behind bushhog is cool. use a freewheeling clutch for the mower drive (needed for safety with a non-independent PTO as is on your H. (Magman has them I think)

A 9 or 10' wheel disk is a good tool for rough tilling the plowed ground Be sure the bearings are not toast, (with mighty strength and a 2X6 to pry with make sure there is little if any play in the shaft bearings on the gangs. 1/8" is max on a plain bearing disk. After which a 10' spring tooth drag is nice.

Planters are becomming hard to find that have all the parts operational and with the sets of plates to plant at differing spacings and seed sizes.

Good hunting, JimN

Back on the farm we pulled a 6 foot disk with the H, very heavily weighted to break up the clods the plow left, no wheels. Assuming the wheel disk has some weight to it, I would think 8 feet is about all an H would want, if it will give good penetration.

I think CNKS is on the money regarding the size of disc that an H will pull. My H packs good power, and really has it"s hands full trying to pull an 8 footer in good soil. A lot of it will depend on how aggressive the gangs are and the quality of the soil in your area. I save the 8 footer for the M.

An H is a handy tractor though. Should be perfect for that two row corn planter, 8 or 10 foot grain drill, and that two bottom plow you mentioned. Don"t worry so much about the manufacturer however...know about it"s compatability with your tractor, and it"s overall condition as the guys stated above.

Good luck with it. Be safe and have fun.

Billy
