Still no Spark !! I'm out of ideas

After rewiring my Super C to the one wire diagram that Bob Melville was kind enough to e-mail, I now have lights, and my ammeter is working. But, I still have no spark on number one cylinder. I have what looks like 12 volts going to the positive side of my coil, but nothing else, and the coil still gets a little warm after cranking it a few times. I have replaced the coil thinking it could be bad, checked my grounds to make sure I have bare metal contact, pulled the coil wire to the distributor and cranked it to see if there was spark but still nothing. Infact, no spark on any cylinders. Would this new Pertronic electronic ignition I just installed have anything to do with this? I hate fooling with electrical! This project is completely done other than this, been working on this restoration project on and off since last Christmas and my 10 acre back yard is now up to my knees! I'm close to finding a roving mechanic and let him finish it. Any other suggestions?

I would reinstall the old points and condenser to see if the tractor starts. Your electronic ignition may be defectve. Hal

Red, did you purchase the new Pertronix Ignition to match your tractor ground??? i.e. Positive or Negative??? They are very much polarity sensitive so if youre tractors say at Pos ground the Pertronix better be for Pos ground or you may have damaged it !!!!! !!!!

When the ignition switch is turned ON there should be a constant 12 volts (unless you used a 6 volt coil with an external ballast resistor) on the coils high input (NOT to distributor) terminal and over on its low (to distributor) terminal the voltage should usually be zero (when elec switch is closed and coil conducts current) but flash to near battery voltage momentarily when the elec switch opens and the coil fires. If you place a test lamp on the coils low side and crank the engine over it should flash on n off if the elec switch works. If it dont flash on n off (lamp on coils low side) the elec switch isnt working so the coil never fires.

Inside the distributor theres a magnet which fits down over the distributor cam and the magnetic pickup on the base to replace the points and each time a magnet passes by the pickup the elec switch opens momentarily (coils stops conducting current) and the coil fires.

With the coil wire removed from the distributor cap (coil end left intact in coil) and placed 1/8 inch from tractor iron and the engine cranked with ignition on, it should spark each time a magnet passes by the pickup coil moumted in the base of the distributor.

INSURE THE ELEC SWITCH IS COMPATIBLE WITH WHAT GROUND THE TRACTOR IS and check the voltage to the coils high input, then place a test lamp on the coils low side output n crank her over n see if the lamp flashes on n off, if not the coils not gonna fire. If the elec switch isnt the correct polarity you may be SOL and I doubt if they warranty it if you hooked it up to the incorrect polarity.

I guess the elec switch is wired correct otherwise????? ?? They have one wire (red??) to the coils high side and another (black??) to its low side and they need the magnet over the cam lobe and the pickup mounted correct in the base for alignment n closeness to the magnet to work you know..... ...

PS is the coil a full 12 volt rated??? If its a 6 volt coil and you dont use any external ballast resistor it will get hottttt ttttt tt.

Have you cranked the engine with the distributor cap off so you could see if the rotor was rotating.Could be something in the distributor drive or possibly the timing gear has been damaged.Worked on an H about two weeks ago for a friend off mine at work and the timing gear came off because the lock tab that goes under the nut wasnt install correctly.Havent been following your dilema very well, but this is just a thought since you have gone through everything else I thought this may be something to look for....Hope this gets you going River Bottom Farmer

I had the same problem. I was not getting spark to the plugs and I tried all the things mentioned here. I finally checked the rotor to see if it was turning and it was not. Turned out the rotor drive gear was worn down and was not engaging. Had to get a replacement but was an easy fix. Fixed that and it cranked right up.

I agree I have heard of people burning them up right off the bat because they did not use a high energy coil.

Even if they use a stock coil an elec ignition (if working lol) produces a better spark due to the faster more positive switching versus the bouncing ringing and burning up/carboning points HOWEVER to get the most bang for the buck and utilize all the advantages an elec switch has to offer, I always recommend they couple it with a high energy performance coil and run a tad wider plug gap.
