Hi Tractor Neighbours. Just wanted you all to know that I convinced a friend of mine to get a physical after what happened to me. Well he did last Monday. His blood pressure was high as well as his cholesterol. He is now on meds. Remember, no one needs to have a stroke, they are totally preventable, Please get your blood pressure checked, strokes have happened to people as young as two, teenagers, 20 year olds..any age. I am doing well and back to farming and haying, left foot is somewhat numb but works like before, neurologist thinks it will get better with time. How lucky I am to have been spared and given a chance to make sure it never happens to me again. I don't want to hear of any of you suffering the same fate..my best to all of you my Tractor Neighbours...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I have read many, maybe not all of your posts, on stroke. I do agree we need to watch our health, and encourage others to do so. But, I personally am not convinced strokes are "totally preventable". I am 58, had surgery on both carotoids and a by pass from below my heart to my legs as there was no blood flow in 1998 (age 50). Legs are again plugged, and they stinted my right caratoid last fall, as it was pluged again. I do not have high cholesterol or high blood pressure. The Drs. have me on 1 aspirn a day. The Drs. say the cause, bottom line is hereditary. My Dad was incapacitated by a stroke in 1995 and passed away in 1997.
My only purpose in this post is to share my experience and if someone has a stroke, that it is possibly they could not avoid it, even under Drs. care.

In cases like yours a stroke will not be preventable until they come up with some routine test that will check your arteries for obstruction instead of the invasive $$$$$ one. Perhaps they will someday.

Jas, I am the same age as you and yes one of the first questions asked of me at the clinic was did anyone in your family have a stroke history, hereditary is a factor. You are correct that other factors such artery sclerosis and conditions such as you experience make a more complex condition for prevention. I do wish you the best and keep us informed, e-mail me anytime..Mike in Exeter Ontario

I have read all your posts, and am in agreement with you. I am 68 and have been getting annual blood tests and physicals since I was 50. At that time my cholesterol was a little high, blood pressure was and still is ok. Some people have high blood pressure and low cholesterol, others have high cholesterol and low blood pressure. Both contribute to heart attacks and strokes. The point I want to make is the cholesterol deposits restrict flow and eventually cause high blood pressure. My guess is your blood pressure was ok before your cholesterol built up, as it built up, your blood pressure went up. All of us geezers have some "hardening of the arteries" which results in high blood pressure. The root cause of a lot of heart attacks and strokes is cholesterol, which when accompanied by high blood pressure can be deadly. I say this because a good blood pressure unit can be bought for $50 -- but, at this point in time you can't check your own cholesterol.
