I just bought a B and the owner added a little 2 cycle oil( 50 to 1) to the gas to help the lifters, engine,ect.., so he claimed. He said he didnt like lead additives. What do you think?, is it an ok idea? Would it carbon up the engine more? I had a little trouble starting her, tuned her up, as per your suggestions, and wham, she starts fine. You guys really know your stuff!! Thanks,Steve

ste: One of the biggest scames of the past three decades has been the "additive" industry. You go into any automotive store today and the shelf space dedecated to additives is rediculous. Most good quality products, be they fuel, oil, antifreeze, etc., etc., etc. are products designed to work.

Your Farmall B will work very well on plain old 87 octaine, no lead gasoline. It is neither a high performance nor high rpm engine. I've burnt thousands of gallons of plain old 87 octaine. no lead gasoline in 4 Farmall gassers over the past 30 years, and as it came from the factory. One of the tractors a Farmall 300 my dad bought new is now on it's 6th set of pistons and sleeves. The bottom end of these engines will require rebuilding long before the head.

There is no need for lead additives, it is just a waste of money. The 2 cycle oil certainly won't hurt anything as long as you don't over do it, and might possibly be beneficial because I think some 2 cycle oil does contain sta-bil, but don't quote me on that. Some folks used to add Marvel Mystery oil to the gas to provide upper cylinder lubrication, but others have never added anything and they are not having problems, so it's up to you.

I don't think it will help anything, but I don't think it will hurt anything either.

The only gas additive I use in my B is Sta-Bil extender to keep the gas fresh, and once in a while a little isopropyl alcohol to keep moisture at bay.
