Cool. In the past few days, I discovered that my M (Engine# FBKM238979X1B) has the new style timing cover (S/N 228082 and up). Does anyone know at what S/N the new HD timing gears were introduced? It would be nice not to have to change out the gears to get the Super M live hydraulic pump. I'd hate to install the pump and then have it strip out the timing gears soon after.

I have read on this forum that the later ones had SM gears, but my parts book does not indicate that -- no SN break. My book would have later numbers in it as it was printed in March 1960. It could be that the old gears were discontinued when the new ones came out, thus there is no need for a SN break. However the gear numbers in my book have the D suffix. Newer parts had the R suffix after 1945. Thus my conclusion (subject to correction) is that there were no SM gears in the later M's. If there were they would have been in the very late ones, shortly before the SM came out. If your M has the original engine (chassis and engine serials do not match) it makes your M about a 1950.

Thank you for the data. I'll bet you're right. Once the HD gears came out, there probably was no sense in stocking the earlier gears. Oh well, I was hoping.

As for chassis S/N... I have no S/N plate. I think it is the original engine though, since all the casting dates are about the same. All early 1951 (U-code) dates.

How much of a pain is it to swap gears... Assuming I can find a decent set?

This is just a guess, take it for what it is worth, but I think if you have the later style timing cover, maybe you already have the HD gears? Is there a part number on the cover you have? The reason for asking is that I have a cover and gear set that is from a 1951. I could compare numbers on the covers and then see if I can find the numbers on the gears. I don't know if I want to sell the parts, might want them myself.

Hey Rusty, I have the new style timing cover, based on engine S/N. That's why I was wondering about the gears. I mean, if I already have the HD timing gears, then all I have to do is find a usable Super M hydraulic pump to get live hydraulics.

ALSO! Thank you to everyone who send messages to me off line. I really appreciate all the help with my Ol' M. :-)

As to changing the gears, the hardest part is probably getting the radiator, etc out of the way, but I have not done it on an intact tractor. I do have all that removed on my 460U, but everything is disassembled as part of an engine rebuild.
