My f-12 starts good as long as I set the advance lever all the way to the right. It used to start when I had it set in the half way position.Could someone tell me why this happened? Thank`s Don.

I'm still trying to figure out why in the summer I have to choke mine. Air density?????

On a "cold" start, even in the summer, I have to choke my F-20, and our Super A and even our 656 gasser usually needs a little choke too. I think it's just the nature of the beast with an updraft carb- you need that choke shut to get the fuel flowing initially since there's no accelerator pump like on an automotove carb. Once the engine's warmed up and things have expanded and are better sealed up, usually the vacumn of the pistons going down can pull enough fuel to start the warm engine....at least that's my theory!

F12/14 used a downdraft carb, not like the usual updraft on Farmalls.Choking these seems to be an art,as most of the time they dont need it and wil flood if you do.If I choke my 14 at all,its flooded and have to wiat a little bit before I can try again.

Yeah, your right on both counts. Been a while since I've seen a 12/14, forgot they were a downdraft.

And I should note, on my F-20, the normal procedure is to turn on the gas(at the sediment bowl), pull the choke, give it ONE revolution with the crank, shut the gas off, then open the choke back up, and it'll usually pop right off on the next pull of the crank. Once it's running I turn the gas back on. If I spin her over more than once with the choke closed, it'll be dripping gas out of the carb. However, if I don't turn it over that one time with the choke shut, I can crank and crank and crank and she won't start. Might be just something my tractor does, since I haven't messed with any other 20's. The 656, however DOES seem to always need to be cranked until it starts with the choke pulled about halfway out.
