steering problem MAYBE???

i have a 706 farmall 1967 year, if i turn the wheels all the way in either direction the tractor will stop moving, the hydraulics seem to work well the quick hitch will lift the front of a truck off the ground. what is the problem?????

the oil lite in the dash does blink, but only when i push the clutch in, also i have worked for kenworth for about 10 years, ive worked on thousands of trucks, but no tractors!! what i do not understand is why the tractor will not move, but as soon as u turn the steering wheel back a 1/2 turn it takes off??? is it hydraulic drive????? it pulls good, no problem on a 3 bottom plow or a 12 foot disc!!

There's a problem in your MCV (Multiple Control Valve) circut. The MCV pump/valve supplies oil to the steering, brakes, TA, and transmission lube/cooling. Steering has priority, so when a problem develops, lube pressure is the first thing you lose, then TA lockup pressure, then power brakes. Since the low side of the TA uses a mechanical sprauge clutch instead of a hydraulic clutch pack like the high side, the tractor should downshift to the low side and keep moving when lockup pressure is lost, but since yours quits moving, it means your TA is out (this probably doesn't have anything to with your current problem). I'd suggest taking the tractor to a Case-IH dealer or someone else who really knows them, as it can take quite a bit of testing to track down a MCV problem. I saw your other post about swapping engines, that would be very easy to do while the tractor was split for a TA job.

It takes hdy pressure from the MCV pump and that pump is located in the center section behind the thick cast valve body down on the left in ft. of the step . Now if your feeling froggy then get and I T manual as it lists all the spring lenghts and test pressures for each and every spring in there and where all the spriongs and valves go and just what they do . But you will not be able to flow rate the pump as this takes special equipment vary few of us barnyard tractor mechaincs have flow raters as it is one of them high priced toys that ya would love to have if ya had and extra 3750 bucks for and older rebuilt one and the brand new ones would get ya a realy nice pickup . I would love to have one of the new digital high volume high pressure ones with the anilizer so i could do the newer PFC systems . But anyhow back to your problem it is one of many things that could be causing it to not move . IT will also stop dead in it's tracks if ya crowed the steering one way and step on the brakes . And the list i gave ya is just a real quick list off the top of my head and like i said it would even take me a bit to find the problem . Now it also could be that it is dumping pressure in the T/A it's self and when ya crowed the steering it is loosen the rest of the lock up pressure and there for it stops . The T/A has to have pressure to lock up the clutch packs , Now also the low side may be on it's way to lunch also . Ya need atleast 235 LBS of lock up pressure myself i like it to be up around 265 on a 706 and higher on the higher HP tractors.

Hey, Tractor Vet, would you be interested in a IH PFC analazer attachment for a flow rater? I picked one up on an auction with a flow rater and I don't think I will ever use the analazer. Its in a steel IH case with all the hoses and adapter fittings. Its heavy tho and would cost a good bit to ship.

Yes indeedy i sure would , I have been chasen one of them for the last ten years even though i am not fixen tractor full time anymore but there are times that on the later 86-88 seires it would come in real handy .

Well your hitch pump has nothing to do with your problem . If any pump is bad it is the MCV pump . But before ya start tearing things apart there are things to check first . you could have a sticking flow divider broken pressure reg. spring blowen o/rings , blown MCV gskt. or low pump volume . Does your oil tel-tale lite work in the dash??? if not fix it . Now if you are not a real good mechanic then getting into the MCV is not for you as things have to be to spec. and ya need some special hyd. fittings and a good hyd pressure gauge , also a flowrater is a real big help . So to save time and money best to take it to a real good mechanic on this one you will be money ahead. Now if you were close i would have no problem checking it out.
