I was about to take off the cover and fix my brakes on my H. My service manual is unclear on whether or not I need to drain off some of the differential fluid. The bottom of the cover appears slightly below the check port. – other advice on performing this job would also be helpful

To add to what both of the guys have said below, if your transmission level is above the brake seals, then you probably have water in the bottom of the case. IH letter series have a habit of getting water into the differential case through the "inletted" bolt holes on the top of the case if left outside. They also draw a lot of moisture into the housing from just condensation. I usually drain off my H in the fall by unscrewing the bottom drain plug just enough so the water comes out. When oil starts to flow with a good color, I screw the plug back in. Usually get a quart or more of water. Be sure the tractor has not moved for at least 12 hours so the water settles to the bottom of the housing. I've seen them with so much water in the housing that they wouldn't move when the water froze the bull gears solid. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

correction to tranny cover bolt holes in reply to jal-SD, 06-23-2006 06:42:48
the only hole in the tranny top cover is for the shifter. all the others are cast shut. pull yours off for yourself and have a look see.

condensation fills them up

just an fyi :)

Thanks all, now if I could just get those frozen cotter pins out ..... nothing is easy...if I had the coin I buy a brand new tractor..... ..so that I could focus on the work around here instead of working on Henryetta

To add to what Steven said, the seal is above the static oil level, you do not need to drain any oil.

The brakes on your H are dry. There is a seal behind the drum.

If there is oil behind the cover, you need to fix the seal.
