BN not charging

This is what I did:
1. Belt is nice and snug
2. Grounds cleaned with sandpaper. Jumper wire to ground made no difference. Ohm meter between VR and Gen and frame reads 0.
3. Wiring is all new and according to John's instructions. I am confident that it is correct.
4. Gen 3rd brush is already set 3 bars from the other one.
5. Ground F terminal on gen while running and no charge.
6. With F term grounded ran jumper from A to Bat and it DID CHARGE to almost 15 on the meter.
7. Remove VR cap and tried to adjust spring to hold set of points closed (made spring tighter) with no change.
8. Layed screwdriver across the coil and points and it DID Charge again.
9. Bought a new VR from tractor supply. Connect battery and polarized it and still no charge

I even read about the guys who said there system didn't charge until running it for awhile then worked. Let it run for awhile with no change. One note: the VR I bought had been opened and I think returned. Could it be bad? Or am I missing something?

As Jim explained when the gennys output voltage exceeds that of the battery (from the residual magnetism in the field poles), the cutout rleay is supposed to close (those small high resistacne relay coil windings) and yours dont seem yo ever do that. The genny seems okay since it does allow charge to the battery when you manually close the connection.

Are you sure the VR is compatible with your ground (Pos or Neg)??? If not thats about the only other thing I might suspect. Many VR's are bi polar, some may not be, others still work but the relay contatcs may not last as long. Of course, the gennys needs polarized and if a VR were connected after a battery polarity got reversed but the genny wasnt re polarized to the new polarity, it can harm the VR. (maybe that happened before you got it????)

My votes same as Jims, bad VR so let us know what happens.
