There was a post about 966 hydraulics being slow.May good ideas but two things I thing not right maybe Tractor Vet can jump in here and make sure I remember right. First checking leak through the third link plate. This can be done, but the hyd oil returns back to the rear end so as to help oil. So in order to check for leaks the return oil must be stoped. To do that one needs to hock a hose to a remote outlet and return the oil into the dipstick tube by activating that hyd valve, then there should be no oil running down in the rear end, if so there is a leak. The other idea I saw was to install the hyd pump and then but the cross over tube in from the filter side. I don't believe this is right, my reason. The tube a has press fit lip seal on it and the housing for the filter has a counter bore on the pump side for the seal to fit into the lip of the seal goes toward the pump so as to seal air out of the system and the press fit holds the tube tight between the pump and filter housing, so the tube should go in from the pump side, or there would be no seal at the filtr end and nothing to hold the tube in place.

Well yep you about covered it . When working on hyd's you can waste a week on could be's . That is why i got a flow rater and all the fittings to make tests and see what pressure and flow was at operating temp. That way you know wright off the bat if you pump is flowen low or the pressure releif is not doing the job or if someone is asking tomuch from a system . the quicky checks don't tell the whole story. Soif you are lucky enough to owen a flow rater or know someone that does and knows how to use it then there are times that it is better to let the dealer run a few tests .A couple hundred bucks spent there may be money well spent .

Heck, I dunno Vet,

We're talking about 30 and 40 year old tractors here.

999% of the time, the darned pumps are wobbled out anyway. Why not start with a pump and then if by chance it still doesn't work, at that point go thru the circle dance of trying to find an illusive problem?

Why not just gamble and play the odds? If it walks, talks and looks like a duck, it probably has pin feathers and is more than likely a darned duck. :>)
