Hi just messing around with the wd6 and I found that taking the ground of the mag will make it run smoother on diesel and make it start easier on gas. Will it hurt anything if I let the ground unhooked? Thanks

Agree with Mark Lake. Only way having the magneto energized could make it run better on diesel would be if the compression release valves are leaking. Otherwise, the auxillary combustion chamber would be completely isolated from the diesel combustion chamber, and leaving the magneto energized wouldn't do anything except erode away the spark plugs. Might try a compression check, if there isn't much difference in compression between the gas & diesel positions it would indicate that the compression release valves aren't closing completely.

newpuller, just for future info, the WD-6 is a gasoline start diesel, which is a rather unique configuration. It has a third valve in each combustion chamber which opens to an auxillary combustion chamber to lower compression and provide access to spark plugs for starting like a conventional gasoline engine. Once the engine has warmed up a little, its switched to diesel by closing the auxillary valves and applying throttle to the diesel injection pump. The magneto is only used while its running on gas; once on diesel it uses compression ignition just like any other diesel. ;)

We have a Super WD6. Dad had the head off it two or three times years ago because it kept bending the gas valves thus holding them part way open and lowering compression on diesel operation. There is a set of contacts in the end of the intake manifold that shut off spark when you switch to diesel. If this switch goes bad it lets the plugs fire when the valves are closed and it will bend the gas valves. Now we always shut off the ignition switch then move the switching lever. This tractor uses the batery ignition and not a mag.

Might not be good if the magneto is still sparking when the engine is running on diesel. If you can come up with another way to ground out the mag then you won't hurt anything.

It shouldn't hurt anything. I've been running my M (Gas) without a switch to ground the mag. I have a wire attached to the ground that I short to ground to shut it down. I worked long and hard on this for 2 months so I have been riding it and such. I'll get around to wiring in a switch sooner or later.
