I have a 1971 IHC 454, 38 hp. gasoline tractor with front end loader. The loader dosent lift until the rpm is around 1500-1800 rpm. and then it is weak, no lifting capacity. I replaced the hydraulic filter today. This filter is located on the left side of the tractor just behind the foot rest and clutch below the parking brake. After replacing the filter it still dosent have much lifting capacity. There was alot of sluge inside filter cover, silver colored mud looking stuff, possiably gear or metal shavings ? but no less like mud or clay. The fluid looked black like dirty motor oil. My question is, the fluid used, is it the same heavy duty hydraulic fluid I use when I fill the hydraulic system ? Any suggestions on what I might try next ? Changing the fluid ?

Hi Terry, the hydraulic pump should deliver about 12 GPM to the MCV valve (series of valves and pipes that the filter mounts on). The MCV valve splits off about 3 GPM that goes to the power steering, oil cooler and power brakes, the remaining 9 GPM goes to the 3pt hitch and remotes. The relief valve and and splitter valves are all in the MCV body and the main hydraulic pump is behind the MCV valve.
When our 454 was about 9 months old it would do the same as yours when the Hytran oil was hot. Come to the end of the field and it would not lift the plow out of the ground unless it was running at full throttle. Since it was still under IH warranty IH tech came out and did flow rate and pressure test of hydraulic system and said the hydraulic pump was weak. Took 454 back to shop and replaced hydraulic pump. Tractor is still running today 35 years later.

I don't recommend working on hydraulic system without proper repair manuals and test equipment. Hi pressure hydraulic oil can cause sever injury.

Hi Terry, that silver colored mud is most likely chewed up parking brake band and will clog the filter again. Use only Hytran or equivilant hydraulic oil. The weak lifting can be:
1) clogged filter or lo hydraulic fluid level 2) stuck or bad pressure relief valve
3) MCV valve not working propperly
4) weak pump

Does power steering work OK?
Number 1) you can change filter and fluid a couple of times. The other causes require special tools to test pressure and flow rating of pump.

Good luck

Steering was extremely tough prior to the filter change then it got easier as long as I wasnt lifting the bucket or using one of the levers, then I noticed the steering went back to being tough to steer... When it is first started when the engine and everything is cold everything works just fine there's just no lifting capacity like I cant scoop up a bucket of dirt and lift it up and dump it into the dump truck but after the engine heats up to 180/200 degrees there's no lift capacity period...

Terry You should use hy tran fluid or an equivelent oil to fill the system. I guess i'd try that first but it sounds like you have some wear issues. You might find someone local who has the equipment to test the output of your pump. GOOD LUCK PUTTER
