Grinding noise in H axle

This afternoon while getting ready to mow pasture I noticed a grinding noise coming from the left axle housing of my H. It wasn't continuous but sounded like something was rubbing at one point as the axle rotated. I greased the fitting on the axle but didn't lesson the noise any. Any ideas as to what is causing this? Thanks.

It sure was... although Dad quit check-row planting by the late '40s, I still remember seeing it well into the '50s, at least in NE Iowa. I know Dad never used check-row after going to a mounted planter on the C, I think in 1950, but it had the roll of wire with the planter. When Mom left the farm (mid-'90s) there was a very nice pull type 2 row IH planter left in the barn with the wire and it didn't look like it had ever been un-rolled or the stakes pushed in the ground.

Several potential causes exist.
If the unit has noise that is cycling at wheel rates (once per turn) it may be a wheel bearing. Which is wheel removal and, depending on some factors, removing axle housing from main casting, Bull gear removal, and effort.

If the nois repeats at many times the wheel rate, it is probably in the brakes. and is still serious, but easier to fix. Broken springs, or pieces of metal, or debris. Lets hope it is brakes. JimN

check bolts that hod rim to wheel. don't ask how I know.
