H ignition problems

I have a 41 H THAT I've recently finished restoring. The tractor has been converted to 12V,THE ORIGINAL MAG IS GONE,AND IT HAS A M&W LIVE HYDRAULIC PUMP ON IT AND AN IH DISTRIBUTOR ON IT.The tractor sees no work, and is a hobby tractor, and is kept inside out of the weather.

The problem I'm having is occasional hard starting, rough running, and bad condensation build-up inside the dist,to the point that I can blow the water out with compressed air.I have a 12v coil on it now,and I added a ballast resistor to the circuit between the ignition switch and the coil. The condensation fouls the points.Sometimes it will only run on 2 cylinders, then smooth up and run fine. The coil is old,but it doesn't appear to be getting hot.A look inside the dist now and you'll find a rusty film build-up on everything.I tried leaving the dust plate out of it,that doesnt appear to help.

The points don't appear burned, but the water inside rusts them

I'm on the verge of changing it to electronic ignition.

Any one encounter similar problems-I did a C last year and had no ignition problems, and they shared basically the same ignition parts.

I'm going to get rid of the ballast resistor, but I use the tractor enough that I shouldn't be getting condensation inside the distributor.Draining the holes is one good idea, but why is it sweating inside there in the first place?

Why is it sweating ? The same reason that a cold beverage does just in reverse . If it's not kept in a climate controlled environment then it cools down at night . But it heats up quickly during the day OUTSIDE the tractor , the INSIDE of the tractor has a lot of mass in the form of iron and steel ( and in the case of the tranny , a lot of fluid ) so it doesn't heat as quickly so condensation forms inside it . That includes the ignition cap . Like a cold beverage just outside in . Not much you can do about it except to work it EVERY day till ALL fluids are hot to the touch and then work it for a couple hours more to evaporate the moisture that formed inside during the morning hours and try the ventillation tricks mentioned elsewhere or you can mount external heaters like magnetic block heaters or set a space heater under it and run them all summer but you'd have to disable the built in thermostat that most of them have . This would be prohibitively expensive in most areas . Another option is a dehumidifier in the storage space but that would only work if it's a garage or some other relitively confined space . Good luck ...Randy

We have had some humid weather, but its done nothing but rain this past month. It may be the dampness causing this problem.

Rain and humidity are big factors in the moisture problem. Like they say, run it down the road once a week to keep it happy, and it will keep you happy.( grandpas words )

DCW, For one thing if its a 12 volt system YOU SHOULDNT USE AN EXTERNAL BALLAST RESISTOR if its really a true full 12 volt rated coil UNLESS its a coil thats labeled "12 volts for use with an external Ballast Resistor" No wonder the coil never gets hot !!! cuz if its really a 12 volt coil and you added an external ballast resistor youre only running something like 1/2 the current through it thats its designed to handle PLUS that causes a weak spark and poor running.

Check the coil and if its really a true full 12 volt (internallay ballasted) coil then THROW OUT THE BALLAST and you should get a hotter spark and better performance. Of course, if its a 6 volt coil then you need the ballast.

simple fix really

mark the distributor on the bottom and take it off

drill three little holes for ventilation and run off and no more water.

Sorry to say this but these tractors where made to work and if you don't work them some the go all to ____. I still have a 1935 tractor sorry not going to say what it is because of the color but I still work it once or twice a year just to keep it up and in good running shape. Take it out and make if work some and I'll bet the problems go away, they aren't made to be trailor queens but work horses
