H oil filter seal. Use it or not?

When changing the oil filter on a 1940 H do you use the rubber "O" ring seal or not?
It seems that if I put the seal in the grove in the base the outside canister does not fit all the way down. If I leave the seal out the outside canister seems to set more firm in the base.

Thanks
Carl from Michigan

I've noticed on mine that the gasket has been dug out so many times that there is a permanent "hole" deeper than the normal groove, right in the front of the filter base. That is exactly where someone (including myself) has used a pick to start the digging process maybe 200 times. It wanted to leak there (I assume it was where the leak started), so I filled the hole with gasket compound to stop it.

I got a 300 utilty with the same thing just about an hour ago.
There wasnt a gasket on it, didnt appear to leak, but the oil is old as dirt, not too sludged up tho.
My first issue was detergent or non? I contacted the former owner and he said he always ran detergent, so thats what im putting in it. Well since the mating surfaces on the can and the block arent so smooth anymore from being dug, rusted, not using a gasket and so on, i cleaned them up the best i could and decided to use the gasket which will hopefully conform to the rough mating surces. if it does leak im sure it will be very minor and ill just live with it.
now, where do i put the oil in? theres no cap on the valve cover. there is one by the hydraulic pump, but i thought maybe that was for hydraulic fluid? It almost looks as if it goes down to the block, and I was always told the fill cap on almost all hydraulic systems is on or near the resevoir which is under the seat. Anyone help me out here?

Thanks to you all for the reply's. You were all right on. After a better look and an ice pick there is a seal in there. Now I will start to pick it out.
Carl

I have bought 2 H farmalls in the last year and both of them had 2 gaskets on the oil fliter and both were leaking badly. It is easy to look at the oilfilter base and think it dose not have a gasket in it but it most likely has. Take time and dig it out and replace it.

The best thing would be to take the time and dig the old seal out. If if is so hard that you have trouble getting it out then it is probably tooooo hard to do a good job of sealing. It is a square o-ring and an ice pick or an o-ring tool should dig it right out.

I just replace my filter and I could not get the seal to sit right so I left it out, however it didnt seem like there was an old one present, but thinking about it now i could be mistaken, anyway no leaks,

There IS an old seal present... the goove is deeper than you think!

And, 50-year-old rubber, exposed to heat and oil, can get so hard you'd swear the old ring is actually the iron bottom to the seal ring groove!

Get rough with it, and dig the old ring(s) out!

You need to change that o-ring every time you change the filter, otherwise that seal will get hard and it will take you about an hour to dig it out, tiny piece by tiny piece. The new seal will do absolutely no good if it's just hanging on the wall.

Yes, there is a seal in the base of the oil filter. It is square and not an O Usually get a new one with a new filter. The old one has to be carefully dug out if replaced. Many seals have lasted through several filter changes I`m sure.

Sounds like you didn't get the old o-ring out.
Use something sharp,(I use an icepick) and get it out. The new one will then fit like it's supposed to.

An interesting question. I've always used the seal although it's not easy to get the thing to set square in the groove when screwing the cover back on and for that reason it usually seeps a small amount of oil but if you don't use the seal it leaks like a sieve.
Replies from some of the other "H" owners would prove very interesting! Somebody with more expertise probably has a solution.

The old seal is probably still in there. Mine went to leaking and it took me an hour to scrap it out completely. If it ain't leaking, leave the old one in.
