HI CHAD OR SOMEONE ELSE. I have this H I built last year for stock pulling, I just checked the compression and I have 140# in all cyl dry and 150# wet. But I dont have much power? It has 3 and 7/16 high domes, Head milled about 60 to 75 thousands,169 cam shaft 300 manifold and SM carb, I rebuilt the Govener my self just to make everything tight. OK as you all can probly tell I am running a high output H4 mag on her. 35 degree trip and timed at TDC, Any Ideas? And no I dont have a dist for her lol JON

Chad is on the wright course but i have found that limiting total advance to no more then 27-29 degrees will give better lug but try and keep the Curb timing at TDC or a shade above now this is on a dist. and i know you know your mags . Also what is the top RPM that you are running ?? Have you done any valve work as far as putting in larger intakes ?? . you can also play with valve adjustment like run your intakes a bit tighter sometimes this will help give her a littel bigger gulp of air fuel . Playen with cam timing but i know it is a pain doing all the work to degree in a cam and then find out that ya lost power .

Thanks Chad, I only have a few hours on her at this point. I put the bush hog on her for about an hour the other day and also did some culipacting . I really dont have any hard work for her right now all the fields are done with the SM, and not much bush hogging left either. No fourth or fifth gear so I cant road work her. Any other ideas on braking her in? That SM carb is so tuchy I have to adjust her every time I do something different. I think you are on the right track with the timing I just did not know what way to go to get more power. What do you think about my compression with a few hours on her? JON

Have you tried to open the main jet adjusting screw? It may not be getting enough fuel. Hal

You could have a number of things going on. Any time you build and engine its easy to get one little thing off and then of course no or little power. Cam could be off by one tooth, mag could have a weak spark, vacuun leak in the manifold, carb not set right or the govinor isn't in sink with the carb. Just a few ideas for you. BTDT and it can make you pull your hair out till you figure out where and why

Jon, I dont think the Mag is hurting anything,,, only thin with a mag is the base timing always stays the same all thru the rpm ranges, its slower reacting than the distributor,, but, still can be dialed in pretty close! They like the timing to be retarded to make good power,,, (on distributors,, rotate the distributor clockwise) till they sound like they are under a slight, ever so slight load at idle,, but, thats with the distributor,, mags,, may be the same, if you can turn them enough on the housing, to change base timing. Make sure the bolt torques are good, valve lash set properly,, or to peak cyl pressure,,, BUT,, if the engine is still fresh,,, (less than 10 hours) I would belive that its not fully broke in just yet. Cyl pressures fluctuate so badly till the rings seat that its like chasing a ghost when your tuning them in. it will be strong, then drop off, and likewise,, if its still fresh,,, go work it for a while, the more time they get the better the results will be, and less of a headache to tune.
