H, transmission gear replacement... 1/2 way there

heya fellas,

I have the top cover off,
removed belly pump,
unbolted the drive shaft coupling at the tranny,

...ummm now what?

I cannot logically determine my next move.

My goal is to replace the top gears.

must I pull a bearing and assembly out the front of the tranny to remove the top rod in the tranny?

please help, details would be much appreciated.

You'll have to take the drive shaft completely off. It takes some pushing, pulling, and special words, but it'll come out. Then you can take the bearing off the transmission case and everything else lifts right out.

I removed the Unviversal joint, and that ONE center bolt in the shaft coupler going into the tranny. I imagine I just pull like the dickens and that bearing comes out.
Or must I remove the drive shaft COMPLETELY to allow enough room.

i.e. unbolt from the clutch side too. I don't want to do that if not necessary.

The bearing will slide out, I push the rod back a few inches, then pull out the top of the tranny cover, replace the roller bearing, slide on my new gears, and reverse the process?

You can't pull the shaft out of the bearing, the transmission drive main dirve gear and shaft are all one piece. You need to take the bearing and it's housing completely out, and you can't do that until the clutch shaft is out of the way. By the way, you didn't need to take that one bolt off, you can remove the drive shaft with that part of the joint still on...

as I remember you need to take the bolts out where it goes through into the rear housing. Watch for # of shimms gaskets and then she should pull back and then out and dont forget to check that front roller bearing there only about $25.00 and oil it good when you reinsatll. JON Its been about 7 or8 years so I may have forgotten things.

haha, you are soooo right about that front roller bearing. I have pieces of that fool thing scattered throughout the front case. So I KNOW that sucker has exploded as the top shaft wiggles. Ok, will do as you say and pull her out the front.

I'll replace the roller bearing and the 4 gears on that shaft.

NO I am not sure if it come out through the front or up and out where the cover was but what I am sayoing is after you unhook that rear carrier I think it will exsplain its self. Make sure you check the bearing carrier where that bearing rides may be munged up also. JON

My bearing dealer couldn't cross reference the IH part # for the pilot bearing (ST 702) so I had to go to the IH dealer to order one. It was around $78.00. Yep, $78.00. Hard to believe. When it came in it was a Bower MU1205. At the bearing store, that bearing is around $28.00. ken

Don't spend that $50 yet, the bearing place I went to listed it in the catalog but couldn't get it, an OEM part only available from IH.

Same here. I bought a 'replacement' bearing and a new one from IH. Would have been much easier to buy it from IH first.

arod, why won't you buy a service manual for this tractor ? They give step by step instructions.

I really should purchase a service manual, you are right. I just started tinkering, and keep digging deeper and deeper into problems, and now am servicing a broken transmission.

Never WANTED to get this in depth, but kind of enjoy it, so yeah, I need to suck it up and shell out the 25$ of so for a manual.
