Can anyone tell me what size sockets I should buy to work on my H. It is bigger than my normal socket set. Which ones are standard for this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

"Bigger than whatcha got," seems like the obvious answer here... If the socket set you have isn't big enough, get the next size bigger.

You've probably got a 3/8" set already, so get a 1/2" set. If you happen to have a 1/2" set already, get a 3/4" set. Heck, you'll probably want both.

If you are limited on funds, deep well 6-point is the most useful type of socket. 12-point... I don't know why they make 12-point, as I've never seen a 12-point bolt head, and all 12-point sockets do is round off the corners...

Harbor Freight impact sockets are the best deal around when you catch them on sale.

You can never have too many wrenches.

Well, I would go out and buy about 4 sets of 3/8 drive, from 1/4 to 7/8, then about 3 sets of 1/2" drive, up to 1 1/4, then a 3/4" set, the cheap ones. I find craftsman handy when I break a socket, or strip a ratchet after using a pipe on it. don't forget the 16" pipe for 3/8 drive, 24" for 1/2 drive and 48" for 3/4 drive. If you wonder why so many sets, it is so you can always find the socket you want. I ussually buy 7/16, 1/2, and 9/16 by the handful because so many get lost.

And a cold chisel for the really big ones like the flywheel nut!

I would start with a 1/2 and 3/8 drive set. That will cover most sizes up to about 1 1/4 inch though you will need a breaker bar on the bigger ones. I probably use those2 drive sizes the most. I have a good 3/4 drive ratchet with miscelaneous sockets up to abut 2". I bought a cheap set of sockets from 2 to 3" as I don't use them much but are needed for a crankshaft pulley nut and disc. If you have to economize do it on the smaller drive set. 8 point sockets are best for most things as they don't round off the corners.

Get the usual 1/4-1 inch sets in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch drives, with the usual overlap. Then add the 3/4 inch ones on an as-needed basis. They cost a bunch. Buy quality, you won't regret it. I'm not going to start an argument on what "quality" is, though.

You will likely need a set of 3/4 inch sockets. The main size used on my Massey is 1 1/16. This is about the limit odf 1/2 inch drive tools. Tractor Supply has the best prices on 3/4 inch socket sets at 59.99. Even Harbor Freight is more expensive.

Yep, you will encounter several 1 1/16" and some 1 1/8". Best to just get a good 3/4" socket set and be done. You will also need boxed and open end wrenches in the same sizes. No need to spend a huge amount of money, much as I hate to admit it, those Harbor-freight tools will get the job done, or check out some prices, and maybe you can stumble across a used name brand set at an auction.

7/16 1/2 9/16 5/8
11/16 3/4 7/8

these seem to be the most dominantly used ones...
for engine and transmission work that is.

the manifold and plugs obviously take a deep well socket, and most others work best for clearance on a shallow socket.

1/2" drive

IH is great about opposing a 5/8 bolt to a 9/16 nut(or did I get that backwards), anyhoo, I would get a 1/2" set of deepwells...

BUT, the torque wrench and breaker bars are usually 3/4" drive, sooooo. yeah... just a variety. Harbor Freight sells cheap.

oh, oh. and above those sizes I have a 24" crescent wrench that fits the bill !!!
