I am the new owner of a 1950 M with an after market wide front end. It has a lot of play in the steering that seems to be coming from the gear box. It is not that big of a problem until you are in road gear. I live in town and was planning on roading it the 8 miles to our land outside of town.

Is there an easy fix? Or is it another winter project?

Thanks for any help!

Check the bearing on the front of the worm shaft. Also the gear on the bolster shaft will wear. On the later Ms it is a full circle gear and yo can move it so it centers on an unworn portion. The earlier gears were half gears and have to be replaced. Let us know what you find.

Jack up the front wheels one at a time and check the play in the spindle bushings & tie-rod ends & wheel bearings. Also check the center pivot pin. Could be just one problem, but probably a combination of all the above. ken

Thanks for the suggestions. It is not in the lower unit. I am going to tear into it tonight after I get the family to bed. I just picked up the I T manual from the library so I will have something to go on.

Thanks!
